The Bicol International Airport in Daraga, Albay is set to start domestic operations in October, aviation authorities said on Monday, October 4.
"We are happy to announce that the Bicol International Airport (BIA) is now nearing completion and will be ready to serve domestic air passengers by October 7," said Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines Chief of Staff and Airport Projects Team Head Danjun Lucas.
According to Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade, construction on the airport was delayed for 11 years before nearing completion. As of October 3, overall progress rate of the BIA is at 92.56%.
International flights will be serviced starting November 7, subject to airlines' applications or intent to operate international flights, Lucas said.
Once fully operational, the BIA is expected to accommodate two million passengers annually. Some 755 jobs were generated through airport construction, with 1,100 more indirect jobs expected to open once the airport begins commercial operations, the Department of Transportation said.
