You Still Have Time to Try These Limited-Edition Dishes Inspired by Singaporean Favorites

(SPOT.ph) Raise your hand if you miss traveling! There’s nothing like the thrill of exploring a different city and getting to know another culture through your taste buds. We’ve all had to make do with the wonders of staying indoors for months, but happily there’s still the option of traveling the world through food, and if you’ve got the Lion City on your mind, you’re in luck: The Singapore Tourism Board has teamed up with some local food spots for Zi Char, so you can order a selection of swoon-worthy Singapore-inspired dishes to have at home!

Fans of Singaporean cuisine are probably already familiar with the concept of zi char, a type of cooking that’s all about home—you’d find it at small food stalls or kopitiam, and it’s best eaten with the entire family or a whole bunch of friends. The Michelin Guide defines it as an “extensive mish-mash of dishes cooked to order, based loosely on Chinese cooking, with plenty of Malay, Indian, and Peranakan influences.” It’s a step above hawker fare, and the idea is to be able to sample a good variety of dishes. “this is an exciting chance to taste our Zi Char favorites as we wait for borders to open,” said Ruby Liu, Singapore Tourism Board’s (STB) Area Director for the Philippines.

Some of the dishes you can order were created specifically for STB’s Zi Char campaign: there’s the Crab Bee Hoon by China Mommy, a lip-smacking Har Cheong Gai by Byrd Tubs, a Chilli Crab Brioche Burger by I’M Hotel’s HotKiss Kitchen, and savory, perfectly piquant Marmite Kurobuta Pork Ribs by Sambar. Home cooks would get a kick out of Comer y Comic’s flavored butters—they’ve got a black-pepper butter with curry leaves, one with shrimp and chives, and a sambal butter made with lemongrass and kaffir. Orders can be placed through their respective social-media channels.
