Vice President Maria Leonor "Leni" Robredo is ready to vie for the presidency in the 2022 elections should she be picked as the opposition's common candidate, she said on Sunday, September 19. She is prepared to go head-to-head once again with Bongbong Marcos, she noted.
Robredo, who has served as the de facto leader of the opposition, dispelled claims that she was no longer interested in joining the presidential race next year. She was still weighing if her candidacy would be in the best interest of the people, explained the VP.

"Ang pinakamadali kong gawin magkandidato para matapos na itong lahat ng speculation. Pero ang pinakaimportante yung after the elections," she said during her weekly radio program "BISErbisyong LENI."
"Marami tayong mga realities na kailangan nating harapin. Pero gaya ng sabi ko, yung assurance ko sa lahat, walang pagduda na kapag ako yung unity candidate, handang-handa ako," she added.
Robredo is one of the nominees of the 1Sambayan opposition coalition. Their aim is to form a single slate of national candidates to run against the administration ticket backed by President Rodrigo Duterte.
Robredo said what would push her to run for president is the possibility that the reign of the Duterte administration would continue beyond 2022 and that the Marcoses would return to power.
"Sabi ko nga, kung one-on-one kami ni BBM (Bongbong Marcos), go na go ako doon. Kung ako yung piliin na unity candidate, go na go ako doon. Pero kung hindi kasi ako at maghahati-hati kami ng boto, yung tanong, best interest ba yun ng bansa natin?" she added.
Marcos, who is planning to run for a national post next year, earlier expressed confidence that he would win against Robredo if the battle is a one-on-one fight. The son of former dictator Ferdinand Marcos lost to the vice president in 2016.
Robredo said the public should not allow the return of the Marcoses to power, what with all the documented cases of the family's abuses when they were in Malacañang.
"Dapat pagtulung-tulungan natin. Kapag hinayaan nating maulit ulit, hindi tayo natuto sa kasaysayan," she said.
For now, Robredo said she would continue her exploratory talks with other potential presidential candidates with the hope of forming the "best possible unity" for the 2022 elections.
"Hangga't may pag-asa pa, magttrabaho ako para mag-unite kaming lahat. Ako, very determined naman ako lagi," she said. "At the end of the day, 'yong future ng bansa natin yung pinakamahalaga."
