It's inevitably gotten worse: Face shields and single-use face masks pile up in dump sites, plastic food containers are the norm with all the takeaways and deliveries, and plastic packaging is just everywhere as more people have turned to online shopping for their essentials. If you want to save Mother Earth one piece of bubble wrap at a time, there are various organizations that can recycle trash.

Green Antz Builders

Green Antz Builders, an eco-conscious construction company based in Plaridel, Bulacan, makes actual bricks from shredded plastic and wet cement. Each brick uses around 100 single-use plastic sachets and is reported to be five times stronger than regular hollow blocks. Plus, it costs less on a per-square meter basis. They provide building materials for the construction of low-cost homes, schools, and daycare centers in Bulacan, Cavite, Rizal, and Cebu. They also provided eco bricks for walkways in front of Net Park Building in Bonifacio Global City. Their drop-off schedule varies per month so make sure to check their page for updates.

Trash Panda

Trash Panda, which launched on Google Play on March 18, 2021, is a mobile app that lets you book trash pickup right from your home. They accept plastic, paper, cardboard, metals, and beverage cartons; then, you can track through the app where your recyclables are going. (Hint: Not to landfills and dumpsites.) Trash Panda also has a browser-friendly app, which iPhone users can use while waiting for the Apple Store release. Collection fee starts at P150, which mostly goes to transport expenses. It has an in-app cashback system, where you earn from the sales of our items to recyclers.

As you can tell from the mobile app's name, TrashCash lets you earn cash with trash. It was initially created by Filipino software developer Benjoe Vidal in late 2019 for a start-up competition, but was only launched on Google Play in February. To use the app, all you have to do is scan the trash using your phone's camera, then wait for it to display the value (in pesos) and category. Once the waste is identified, you can segregate the garbage and bring it to the nearest drop-off locations of TrashCash's partner organizations and barangays. You can also use your TrashCash points to redeem discounts from partner brands like ShowerHut eco-friendly bath bars.

The Plastic Flamingo (also known as The Plaf) is a French social enterprise based in the Philippines. They're on a mission to collect and recycle plastic waste into sustainable products, particularly to fight marine pollution. They accept all types of plastics, like water bottles, plastic trays, microwavable containers, ice-cream tubs, and chips packaging, as long as they're cleaned from any residual waste, and are washed, and dried. You can have your waste delivered to their doorstep at the main warehouse in Putatan, Muntinlupa, or bring your cleaned plastic waste to their drop-off points.

Envirotech Waste Recycling, which is based in Davao City, collects plastic waste from landfills and transforms them into school chairs. It was founded in 2010 by mechanical engineer Winchester Lemen, who later joined forces with entrepreneur Derrick Tan to start Winder Recycling Company in 2017. Their mission is two-fold: Reduce plastic waste in the Philippines and reduce the "backlog of 1.7 million school chairs in our country." Winder Recycling Company also produces garden pots (P99 to P300), skateboards (P1,300), and picnic tables (P12,000) from recycled plastic.
