(SPOT.ph) With a month left before the deadline of voter's registration, the Commission on Elections on Friday, August 27, signed a Memorandum of Agreement to open satellite registration booths at SM Supermalls nationwide. Commission on Elections (COMELEC) spokesperson James Jimenez is optimistic that this would encourage more people to register in preparation for the Philippine general elections on May 9, 2022.

The number of registered voters have hit the 61-million mark ahead of the September 30 deadline. "Lalaki pa 'yan," said Jimenez during the official launch of the partnership at SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City.

About eight months were lost in the registration period that started in January 2020 due to the strict quarantine restrictions at the height of the pandemic. Despite calls to move the deadline, COMELEC remains firm in their decision to keep things on schedule. They have, instead, extended voter registration hours to run from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Monday to Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and holidays.

Selected Robinsons Malls were also tapped by the COMELEC to host voter registration booths starting in July.

Voter registration remains suspended in areas under Enhanced Community Quarantine and Modified Community Quarantine, including Metro Manila. But COMELEC satellite booths are operational in places under General Community Quarantine.

To apply for registration, log on to COMELEC's website to download a form. You can also pick up a form at the satellite booths.
