(SPOT.ph) Social media has fallen in love with Margielyn Didal's chill and positive vibe, and who wouldn't after seeing the skateboarder shine at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics? While most of us can’t actually snag an invite to hang out with her in person, we got the next best thing: A list of her favorite places in her hometown of Cebu City, straight from the Olympian herself.

We got to catch up with the skateboarder during a virtual press conference arranged by Red Bull PH and asked about her fave hangouts in Cebu. Not surprisingly, first on the pride of Lahug’s list of top hangouts is her home. With the new normal and all, we’d assume as much, but here’s one tidbit that’ll make you go aww: Didal says that she wants to hurry home because her dog is going to give birth soon.
Didal then goes on to talk about Cebu's white-sand beaches, which she’s described as “ang mga pinakanindot nga dagat [the most beautiful beaches].” When pressed about which spot is her favorite, she instead enumerates many of the famous beaches: “North: Catmon, Carmen. South: Moalboal. Santa Fe, Bantayan Island—sobrahan ka-chill, barato ang mga palitonon. [So chill, and everything is cheap.]”

She jokes that she frequents Liloan the most because that’s where her girlfriend lives. In pre-COVID times, you could spontaneously find a no-frills payag (hut) to rent by the water there. Just watch out for the municipality’s namesake lilo or whirlpool when you go for a swim.
As for food, Didal didn’t hesitate to say pungko-pungko with affordable meals, particularly siomai stalls (colloquially called a siomayan), and encouraged tourists to try living like a local. “Nakasagop not only skaters but also high school students kay budget-budget. Ang siomai tag-tres. With puso, mao na ang pirmi kan-on. [This has saved not only skaters but also high school students whose budgets are tight. Siomai is only P3. With puso, that’s what skaters always eat.]”
She even name-checked the famous siomai sa Tisa. Barangay Tisa is supposedly the birthplace of the best street siomai in the city. The name has grown so popular that you’ll find a number of businesses all laying claim to it, but it's Way Tugpahay Siomai sa Tisa that the skateboarder mentions.
As for her coach, Dani Bautista, he recommends an underrated spot for freediving at Kontiki Mactan. “I think that's something people should experience in Cebu. It’s a very good freediving spot and it’s just near the city. It’s pretty amazing the stuff you can see underwater,” he says.
