(SPOT.ph) Before streaming and subtitles, kids of the '90s grew up waiting for their favorite dubbed animation on TV (with commercials, of course). Anime series Slam Dunk, which ran in Japan from 1993 to 1996, was one of them. It was aired with Tagalog dubbing on ABC 5 in 1995, on RPN 9 in 1998, and then on GMA 7 in 2002. Kids were cheering for the popular basketball player Kaede Rukawa and laughing out loud on the crazy antics of Hanamichi Sakuragi. More than two decates later, a new Slam Dunk movie is officially returning to the big screen in 2022. This is the fifth film adaptation of the popular series, with the four other films produced by Toei Animation in the mid-'90s.

Plans for the upcoming movie was revealed back on January 7 by Takehiko Inoue himself, the writer and illustrator of the OG manga series (1990 to 1996) from which the anime was based from. He returns as the film adaptation's writer and director alongside Toei Animation as the producer. After keeping the production under wraps, Inoue dropped the movie poster on his Facebook account on August 13 to reveal the release date (or at least, the year). Toei Animation, in addition, released a 30-second teaser that confirms the autumn 2022 premiere in Japan.

The popularity of the sport shot up in Japan arguably because of Slam Dunk. Japan Basketball Association even commended Inoue in 2010 for his help in popularizing the sport.
