(SPOT.ph) When you’re looking for a dessert that’s more laid-back than a grandiose cake but daintier than your standard cookie, cream puffs are a stellar choice. This classic dessert has a rather puzzling history, but some sources say they’ve been around as early as the 1540s in France! They consist of a base made with choux pastry—a pastry dough that, when baked, puffs up to have a hollow, airy center and light yet subtly-chewy consistency. You’ll find it used in other desserts like eclairs and beignets, but in the case of cream puffs, they’re filled with a cream filling of sorts—usually whipped cream, custard, and the like, which can also be flavored.

From there cream puffs can just be served as is, but they can also be dressed up with a dusting of powdered sugar, a dip or glaze of melted chocolate, or a topping of caramelized sugar that hardens into a sweet and crisp shell. You can also get it as a cone-shaped tower, bound with threads of caramelized sugar to form what’s called a croquembouche! If you’re looking for great versions, these shops have you covered.

Chances are, you had your first taste of cream puffs via Japanese brand Beard Papa’s, who was a staple at malls many years back. Though they gradually closed many branches down over the years, fans of the pastry were in for a real treat when they reopened in 2019—and especially now that you can order from them for delivery! You’ve got a couple of pastry-base options here—there’s the classic Pie Cream Puff that’s got a lightly crisp yet airy shell, the chocolate-dipped Eclair Cream Puff, and the Langue de Chat that’s enrobed in a light cookie shell. From there you can choose your filling: Custard, Matcha, or Milo. You can fill out their order form or course your orders through GrabFood or Pickaroo to get your fix.

For orders, fill out Beard Papa’s order form or find Beard Papa’s on GrabFood or Pickaroo. You can also check out their Facebook page.
