(SPOT.ph) Today, July 7, IKEA Philippines was set to launch their highly anticipated membership program (known as IKEA Family) in the Philippines. As the clock struck midnight, folks all over the country were ready on their smartphones and computers to sign up—especially considering that three people from the first wave of members would be getting a chance to win an IKEA home makeover package worth P50,000. Unfortunately, to the disappointment of many, the IKEA Family website crashed due to a surge in visitors. According to comments posted on the IKEA Philippines Facebook page, users had difficulties getting past the Personal Data Protection Notice.

While the website and IKEA team were equipped to receive up to 120,000 new users in the first 24 hours of launch, Georg Platzer, store manager of IKEA's first Philippine branch in Pasay City, stated that as many as 100,000 people tried to sign-up in the first minute alone. No wonder the website crashed.

Platzer also shared in a press conference held July 1 that no other IKEA store in the world has reached the goal of 100,000 new membership sign-ups in just 24 hours. The Philippines was set to be the very first.

In a video posted Wednesday, July 7, Platzer apologized for and explained the technical issue that took place, saying that IKEA is "both very humbled and surprised by the surge of visitors to our IKEA Family website" and that they "did not anticipate this outpouring of support from the Philippines."

"Rest assured that our team is hard at work to resolve the issue and the site will be back again soon," said Platzer. He ended the video by emphasizing that despite technical difficulties, sign-ups to IKEA Family will remain free forever and entitle shoppers to a lifetime membership. Members get access to exclusive rewards, promos, discounts, invitations, and store updates.

As of writing, the IKEA Family website is still unserviceable.
