(SPOT.ph) For most of us, school vacations (often in the summer or what PAGASA wants to call "dry season") mean heading to our grandparents' house out of town. It often has hardwood floors that creak beneath our feet, thin curtains where cool breeze seeps in, and wooden furniture that turn out to be heirloom pieces. This same vibe comes to mind upon spotting AYO AYO, a cafe, sauna, and neighborhood inn all rolled in one. You can find it along Emilio Osmeña Street in Guadalupe, Cebu City.
According to co-owner Tomohiko Terada, the establishment takes after the meaning behind its name: "áyo," which is a Sebwano adjective for good. "Ayo-ayo" is often muttered to denote well wishes, in the same way we say "take care" or "keep safe" when saying goodbye to someone. AYO AYO abide by three mantras: "Be Ayo Ayo, more Ayo Ayo," "Don’t bring negativity," and "Kaizen" (a Japanese word that means improving every day).
The multi-functional establishment has a cafe and restaurant that serves Japanese-Filipino fusion food. They also have cocktails, which you can enjoy with some music by local DJs on Saturday evenings. There's a sauna facility, which costs P400 for an hour and a half; and a massage service for P500 an hour. Their private suite, which can accommodate up to two people for P800, can be found at the upstairs bedroom.
The whole place is pet-friendly, too, so expect their resident doggo, "Given," just roaming around and asking for cuddles or boops.
