Two Filipinas Have Given Us Our First Multi-Medal Olympic Win in Nearly a Century

(SPOT.ph) Nesthy Petecio has secured an Olympic bronze medal for the Philippines! The featherweight boxer won against Colombia's Arias Castaneda 5-0 at the quarterfinal on Wednesday, July 28 at the Tokyo Olympics. This means that she will advance to the semifinals, and possibly, the finals for another shiny gold medal for the Philippines.

This win means another Olympic medal for the Philippines following weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz's historic first-ever gold on July 26! Speaking of firsts, this double win at the Tokyo Olympics is the first multi-medal win for the Philippines since the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics. And yup, it was won for us by two amazing Filipinas in weightlifting and boxing. Let that sink in for a moment.

The 1932 Los Angeles Olympics saw three Pinoys climb the podium, snagging three bronze medals: Teofilo Yldefonso, Simeon Toribio, and Jose Villanueva. Yldefonso, the "Ilocano Shark" for swimming, Toribio for high jump, and Villanueva for boxing.

Now nearly a century later, Diaz has given us our first gold while Petecio is still in the running for another! Meanwhile, more of our athletes are set to vie for another. Who says we can't aim for three medals once again, or heck, even more?
