The Flying Fish Boutique Hostel Cebu

8 Adelfa Street, El Dorado Subdivision, Banilad, Cebu City

Rates start at P500/bed (dorm room) or P1,100/room

The artsy Flying Fish Hostel has that under-the-radar cool vibe, even when a lot of people already know about it. What sets it apart from other stays is that it took the original structure—an ancestral house—and updated the space by adding a pool and a bar. It retained the old elements like wooden panels—lots and lots of it, but also played it up by adding mid-century furniture and contrasting it with contemporary art on the bare concrete walls. Plus, you can't miss the mural by the staircase—a great backdrop for your next profile photo, we must say.

Sandy Drive, Bulacao, Talisay City

Rates start at P990/night

Ola isn’t located in Cebu City but in the neighboring city of Talisay, and that alone will guarantee a different experience. Ola is as colorful as you expect its warm Latin name to be. Its dining area looks like a mini food park, and it located right next to the pool, which has a waterfall shower. They also have a billiards hall, a Netflix room, and a basketball court. You can even rent the entire place and fit 60 people here.

Asmara Urban Resort & Lifestyle Village

Rates start at P4,800/night

Asmara Urban Resort belongs to a new breed of hotels that don’t rely on the beach to provide a relaxing atmosphere. It’s fairly accessible—and we mean it’s only 20 to 30 minutes away from a real mall, not a strip mall. Although currently best known for its bar and sports amenities—tennis court, swimming pool, yoga classes—it actually prides itself in its sustainability. The restaurant on the premises, Ristorante La Piccola Roma, serves Italian dishes from breakfast till dinner. Plus, they have a menu for vegans, too!

Yello Hotel

Wilson Street, Lahug, Cebu City

Rates start at P550/bed and P1,788/room

Yello stands out not just because of its structure's eye-catching color, but also because of how it makes use of available technology. After all, they call themselves “the only smart + design hotel in the heart of Cebu”—they have a friendly robot that you can talk to upon arrival, an app where you can check out the amenities, send messages to the staff, and a feature which lets you use your smartphone as a mobile guest key, among others. Plus, their free valet parking can be found on a mechanized parking lot.

AYO AYO Cafe & Sauna

44 Emilio Osmeña Street, Guadalupe, Cebu City

Rates start at P800/night

This cute hostel-slash-coffee shop-slash sauna is located in the most residential barangay of Cebu City. The structure used to be an old Spanish house that’s since been outfitted with lots of quirky design elements like a fresh coat of yellow paint, wooden surfboards as wall decor and as furniture, and chevron wooden panels.

This quaint hostel opened in 2017 but went through some changes during the pandemic. Now rooms are no longer shared dorm-type spaces, but private suites. They’ve also added the mini bar and a wellness facility which has the sauna, hot tub, and massage space. The café serves Japanese-inspired cuisine, where you can have your fill of omurice, croquettes, and even Japanese-style burgers.
