Meet the Pinoy Illustrator Whose Quirky Works Were Chosen By Nike

When it comes to creativity, the sky's the limit. But this Nike By You featured artist chose to keep her art style grounded. Jill Arteche's quirky and colorful characters are all anchored on the imperfect but very abundant and enthusiastic nature of humans—and her art is the current face of the June collection in Nike Park, Bonifacio Global City.

"I have always found everyday experiences comforting yet exciting. My fondness for drawing funny-looking people stems from this as I believe it's in these same mundane moments that we find our truest and ugliest selves," Arteche told SPIN Life. For her, the purpose is to be relatable. "I always make it a point to create works that bring a sense of ease and familiarity to people without compromising myself."

All eight designs, which are available in custom shirts and tote bags, are inspired by Girls Got Game PH, a non-profit organization that conducts various sports camps for young girls.

"It hopes to show the 'New Possibilities' that women, especially young Filipinas, can have in the way they lead their lives, view their goals for the future, and how they presently take up space despite the limitations society has of them," she explained.

As an artist, Arteche is familiar with the environment of working in a male-dominated field. "Working in the arts, I believe reshaping these perceptions is key to empowering young girls and showing them that the possibilities are limitless," she said. "Women in sports are still put at a disadvantage as compared to men in the field. I'm not an athlete but it's clear how these disadvantages towards female athletes stem from the gender stereotypes society has of them."

The collaboration is also a full circle moment for Arteche, who customizes Nike Air Force 1 pairs. She even designed a pair for DJ Bigboy Cheng, one of the most popular sneaker, art, and toy collectors in the country.
