(SPOT.ph) The Philippine theater industry, like most sectors around the world, has been badly hit by the pandemic with theaters temporary closed since 2020. Hoping to extend a helping hand to out Filipino theater artists, GMG Productions is launching a workshop series where people can learn how to dance for musical theater under the tutelage of international actors and creatives.
You can take part in one-hour classes every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 3 p.m., starting on June 7, through Zoom. Aside from classes on choreography, the online sessions also include Q&A with the cast. Enrollment is already ongoing and workshop fee is at P3,500 per week.
Manila-based GMG Productions brought the international cast of Cats, Matilda, The Lion King, The Phantom of the Opera, and other world-renowned musicals to Philippine shores in the last decade. For the month of June, they're connecting us to four cast members, who will be teaching the following musical theater song numbers:
- Week 1: "Hot Honey Rag" from Chicago with Darren Greeff (resident choreographer of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Evita, and Chicago)
- Week 2: "Mamma Mia" from Mamma Mia! with Alex O’Reilly (cast member of Mamma Mia!)
- Week 3: "Jellicle Ball" from Cats with Brian O’Muiri (touring member of Cats)
- Week 4: "Cool" from West Side Story with Louisa Talbot (resident choreographer of West Side Story, Grease, Rocky Horror Show, and Matilda)
A portion of the sales goes to the Open House Fundraiser, an online fundraising project by Artist Welfare Project, Philstage, SPIT MNL, Third World Improv, and the Theater Actor’s Guild and Ticket2Me, for the benefit of the local performing arts community.
