(SPOT.ph) Desserts come in a number of popular forms in Manila, like cakes, cookies, and ice cream. But in the name of expanding our food horizons, it’s about time we put the spotlight on pie. Essentially a sweet or savory (and often, baked) dish with a crust and a filling, it’s a wonderful medium to deliver all kinds of flavors—from the tangy and fruity to the rich and creamy to the umami-rich and meaty. We’ve listed down the essential pie shops in Manila that you can count on for great-tasting versions.

Hey Pie People

Though launched just this May, Hey Pie People has become one of the best-known online pie sellers on local social media. At the helm is mom-slash-pie maker Raeanne Young-Sagan, who has gained traction for her classic and experimental pies and friendship with American cookbook author Erin McDowell (who wrote the famed The Book on Pie, no less!).

Hey Pie People’s menu changes weekly; previous items include the Mango and Black Forest Pies. But you can expect whatever fillings they’ve got to be in Hey Pie People’s flaky, buttery crust that’s famously sturdy (you can hold a whole pie out of the container with your hands, or a slice like you would a pizza) but not tough. Hey Pie People takes orders through an order form that they post on their Instagram page at 10 a.m. every Saturday. You’ll want to set an alarm though, because they sell out quickly—like as fast as two minutes during their debut run!

For orders and inquiries, check out Hey Pie People’s Instagram page.

Wallow Bakery

Wallow Bakery might be primarily known for their cookies, but they make swoon-worthy pies as well. They’ve got classics like the tangy Lemon Meringue (P500/seven inches), and the Chocolate Pudding (P600/seven inches) made with Auro Chocolate. A more vibrant-tasting choice is the Kiwi Calamansi Pie (P550/seven inches), which combines the two fruits for an unforgettable fruity dessert. Give these pies a try by sending them a message on social media.

This special dessert has succulent young-coconut strips, a rich dairy cream custard, and a caramelized-butter coconut-macaroon topping—and they come together for a whole that’s every bit as rich as it sounds! Pie Day MNL believes every day is a “good day for pie”—and with their playful pies, we’re inclined to agree. Think Tiramisu (P900) with a mascarpone crema, espresso, lady fingers, and graham; Banoffee (P1,000) with a dark-chocolate mousse, dulce de leche, bananas, and graham; and the Mocha Loca (P900) with a cookies-and-cream mousse, espresso, lady fingers, and graham. You can hit up their DMs on Instagram to give these a try.
