(SPOT.ph) For a lot of people, the home basement is just a place to chuck things that don't belong elsewhere. But for Kerri Ong-Guico, it's home to what she dubs her "baking room"—a special kitchen where she bakes some of the prettiest cakes you'll ever see! Her home-based business is dubbed Chef Kerri's Baking Room, and it's bound to be one of your go-tos for any and all special occasions—after all, there's no celebration that isn't made better with a stunning cake at the center of the table.
A chef and mom, Ong-Guico's got an impressive list of culinary credentials, from earning a degree at Le Cordon Bleu in San Fransisco, to working at acclaimed restaurants and hotels (like Gary Danko in San Fransisco and Bellagio in Las Vegas), to teaching at the Philippine School of Culinary Arts in Cebu. She eventually settled down to become a housewife as she started a family, and loved baking for fun in the "baking room" they had set up in their basement. But Ong-Guico was inspired to start the business during the pandemic as she one day successfully baked a dessert she had long been wanting to master: chiffon cake.
"For how many years, my mom would ask me to bake that, and then for some reason I just couldn’t make it right," Ong-Guico shares in an exchange with SPOT.ph. "This pandemic lang... I got it right, finally, after [around 20] years!" She made a strawberry cream cake with a chiffon-cake base and posted it on social media, saying anybody who was interested could order—but didn't anticipate that there would be such a great response. "OMG, people were ordering! It was very unexpected." With that, Chef Kerri's Baking Room was born.

Ong-Guico describes her philosophy as being "simple, clean, and elegant" and she emphasizes quality above all else. She also goes for classic flavors, making sure that the resulting cakes aren't too sweet (her frostings have no sugar added!). There are fruity entries like the Mangoes 'n Cream (P2,200/10 by six inches), deep and dark stunners like the Belgian Chocolate Truffle Cake (P2,800/nine by six inches), lush crepe cakes like the Fresh Strawberry Mille Crepe Cake (P2,800/10 by six inches), and creamy cheesecakes like the Mixed Berries Cheesecake (P3,800/regular, P4,500/sugar-free; both nine by five inches).
For grander occassions, Chef Kerri's Baking Room also has a range of 24k-gold leaf coated cakes—including the 24K Glamour Cake (P6,800/nine by six inches) with a moist Belgian chocolate cake underneath, edible geode crystals, and handcrafted sugar flowers on top; and the 24K Allure Cake (P4,800/nine by six inches) topped with berries and chocolate truffles. Ong-Guico also makes the totally picturesque La Fleur Couture Cake (P6,800/approximately 10 by 10 inches), a gorgeous vanilla-chiffon cake layered with cream-cheese frosting, covered in elegant edible petals whose colors you can customize.
A standout section of Chef Kerri's Baking Room's lineup are her whimsical funfetti cakes, which Ong-Guico designs in collaboration with her kids! Her kids would send Ong-Guico pictures for inspiration, and they would even get a percentage of the sales. Among the cakes in this line are the Classic Funfetti Surprise Cake (P3,800/10 by six inches) with sprinkles that spill out as you slice into the cake, and the Ice Cream Sunday Funfetti Cake (P3,800/10 by six inches) that looks like a giant sundae!
And for Mother's Day, you'll be spoiled for choice with their range of new made-for-mom cakes: Go floral with the carnation- and rose-topped Multicolore (P6,800) or Belles Fleurs d’Amour in Rose (P6,800), or go chocolatey with the bittersweet, rose- and eucalyptus-adorned Belles Fleurs d’Amour in Rouge (P6,800). Alternatively, you can show mom just how much you value her like royalty with the crown-topped, 24K gold-leaf coated 24K Throne for the Queen of Everything (P4,800).
