(SPOT.ph) Cebuanos on Wednesday, April 14 are celebrating the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Christianity in the Philippines. In connection to this, President Rodrigo Duterte signed a proclamation declaring that April 14 is a Special Non-Working Holiday in Cebu City.
"It is but fitting and proper that the people of the City of Cebu be given full opportunity to celebrate and participate in the occasion with appropriate ceremonies, subject to community quarantine, social distancing, and other public health measures," Proclamation No. 1130 indicated.
On Tuesday, April 13, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines and Cebu City local government unit unveiled the historical marker of Antonio Pigafetta at Plaza Independencia. He was an Italian scholar who joined Ferdinand Magellan's expedition and kept notes of the voyage, including their arrival in our islands. His journal is regarded as the first recorded document of the Sebwano language.
The Archdiocese of Cebu will also conduct a reenactment of the first baptism on April 14 in Plaza Sugbo in downtown Cebu City. The ceremony took place on April 14, 1521 with Rajah Humabon and Queen Juana as the first baptized Filipinos. Only 700 people are allowed to join the event given quarantine restrictions.
