(SPOT.ph) Finally: The Skyway Extension in the south of Metro Manila opened its northbound lanes at 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 11. The best part? Motorists can use it toll-free "until further notice" announced the San Miguel Corporation in a statement on April 12.
For now, only Class 1 vehicles with RFID capability can use the just-opened lanes, clarified the company. This new four-kilometer segment of the Skyway extends the above-ground highway from Sucat in Parañaque City to Susana Heights in Muntinlupa City. Ideally, this extension—the construction of which has been a major headache to motorists since 2019—will help decongest the usually crowded areas along the South Luzon Expressway.
"Our long-term solution to addressing traffic particularly on [South Luzon Expressway (SLEX)] heading to the Alabang area has finally been realized," said San Miguel Corporation (SMC) chief Ramon Ang in the statement. The extension will allow motorists from provinces like Laguna, Batangas, and Cavite to bypass the Alabang viaduct and head straight to Makati, Manila, or Quezon City through the Skyway Stage 3.
The northbound section has three lanes, allowing for the additional capacity of 4,500 vehicles per hour. According to Ang, the new extension will cut down travel time from SLEX to the North Luzon Expressway down to just 25 to 30 minutes instead of the usual two to three hours. Structural works were completed on March 24.
