This Cool New Foldable E-Scooter Can Be Controlled With Your Cell Phone

(SPOT.ph) With public transportation woes that came along with the quarantine or the fact that heavy traffic is still very much a thing, you might have considered getting an e-scooter as a means to get around the Metro. Here's something from Lenovo that you might want to check out: the M2 electric scooter. Yup, they're not just making smartphones and laptops now; it is the company’s first e-scooter, which marks their entry into the  personal mobility space.

Lenovo M2 Electric Scooter: Design, Weight, Features

The M2’s clean and minimalist design has a premium feel while highlighting the e-scooter’s overall functionality. The familiar L-shaped kick scooter frame is made from magnesium and aluminum alloy material, which is usually found in bicycles and airplanes. This gives the M2 a weight of 15 kilograms.

Next to mobility, portability is another concern with scooters. Whether it’s for storage or for additional convenience when traveling, reducing a scooter’s overall footprint is a practical feature. A well-engineered folding mechanism allows the M2 to fold in three seconds flat with a single flip of the magnesium locking clasp. The strong frame allows for a carrying load of up to 120 kilograms.

How Fast Can It Go?

Powering the M2 is a 350W motor which packs enough power to propel the scooter for a max speed of 25 km/h. In first gear, the M2 can go up to 9km/h, on second gear 17km/h, and 25km/h on third. On inclines, the M2 can climb up gradients as steep as 15 degrees which beats other e-scooters in the same class—some can only go from anywhere to 8 to 10-degree inclines. The scooter’s 7.5Ah capacity lithium battery pack is good for a range of around 30 kilometers when fully charged. Charging time is around 3 to 4 hours. The battery pack also has built-in safety features such as short circuit, over current, over charge, over discharge and temperature protection.

The M2 rides on 8.5-inch honeycomb tires, which are both flat and puncture resistant thanks to their airless construction. The tires are made from high-density and high-strength rubber which give it a longer service life. The honeycomb tire structure also offers better shock absorption that’s comparable to pneumatic (read: air-filled) tires. Combined with the honeycomb tires, the M2’s front and rear shock absorbers make for a smooth ride on rougher roads and surfaces. 

Safety Features

Like the triple suspension system, the M2 also has a triple brake system. A combination of an electronic motor brake, a disc brake, and a rear pedal brake provides ample stopping power on varied road conditions. The slip-resistant rubber pad on the scooter’s deck reduces the likelihood of your feet losing their grip.

As an added safety feature, the M2 prevents instant acceleration when starting up. With some scooters, especially with beginners, pressing the accelerator by accident will suddenly jerk the scooter forward. For the M2, you initially need to do a manual running start of the scooter before the thumb accelerator can be engaged. Integrated into the handlebar is an LED display system for quickly looking at the scooter’s charge status, speed, gear, and other important information.

Yes, You Can Control It With Your Phone

Of course, the M2 wouldn’t be a Lenovo scooter if it didn’t have phone connectivity. Installing the M2 app allows users to lock, start, stop, change gears, turn on the headlight, and monitor other vital functions and stats of the scooter. 

For those worried about the scooter’s serviceability, Lenovo Philippines says that the M2 is designed to be compatible with standard upgrade parts for scooters, which are available in certified scooter shops.

This e-scooter retails for P19,995 but you can get it for P16,995 during the pre-order period which runs until March 27 on the Lenovo Flagship Store on Lazada. You can score additional freebies such as a free Herschel bag and Lenovo wireless earphones.
