Linya-Linya Teams Up With Lualhati Bautista to Create a T-Shirt That Inspires Hope

(SPOT.ph) In a political landscape where P15 billion pesos can go missing without warning (sorry, we meant get "liquidated"), homicide victims aren't given due justice, and media networks can be shut down, many have made it a point to bring up the cruelty and corruption of the Martial Law era in the Philippines with outcries of #NeverAgain and reminders about the heroes and victims who suffered its most brutal silencing tactics. A figure many would look to and celebrate as a reminder of that dark time in our history is activist-slash-novelist Lualhati Bautista who famously wrote Dekada '70, which details the horrors of a period of censorship, repression, and widespread torture. To this day, Bautista remains a voice against tyranny and fascism and recently, her work and legacy was commemorated in the form of a T-shirt by local brand Linya-Linya.

"Sundin and tibok ng puso. Sundan ang sariling bahaghari," reads this graphic tee, referring to a Facebook post by the famous author dated December 30, 2020. The post details Bautista's apprehensions about compiling and releasing poems she had written in the 1970s, worried that no one would read poetry by someone regarded primarily as a novelist. The compilation ended up becoming the book Alitaptap sa Gabing Madilim, which Bautista describes as "ang pinaka-blockbuster" out of all of her books. In the end, she comes to the conclusion that writers should follow their gut instincts and when left with nothing to do, find something to put out into the world.

"This exact line resonated with us because whatever situation we’re in, we can always do something to create positive change," says Ali Sangalang, creative director of Linya-Linya. "Imbes magpalunod sa ingay ng nangyayari sa labas, kailangan lang pakinggan ang sinasabi ng loob. The message is timely for a populace that often feels helpless and voiceless in the face of an unpredictable pandemic.

Bautista's quote is stylized onto a heart, which sports the colors of the Philippine flag so the T-shirt then becomes a symbol of hope and courage—something we all could use a little more of in these trying times.
