Intramuros Announces Temporary Closure Amid COVID Cases Spike

(SPOT.ph) Three sites in Intramuros—namely Fort Santiago, Baluarte de San Diego, and Casa Manilareopened to the public on February 17 with health protocols in place. However, on March 15, the Intramuros Administration announced that Fort Santiago, Baluarte de San Diego, Casa Manila Museum, Plaza Roma, President's Gallery and the top of the walls are once again closed until further notice. This comes after the confirmation of a new COVID-19 variant in the country and a spike in new cases in the past week. According to the Intramuros Administration, the decision was made after consultation with the Manila Health Bureau.

All gates in Intramuros, except Gates 3 (near Manila Cathedral) and 11 (near DOLE-PLM), will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. in accordance with Metro Manila's unified curfew hours from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. until March 31. All other plazas shall be cleared of people at 6:30 p.m., while establishments offering board and lodging are required to coordinate with the barangay before entry is allowed. Pass-thru traffic is not allowed and guards posted at entry gates shall check visitor purpose.

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno has placed six barangays under a four-day lockdown from March 17, 12:01 a.m. to March 20, 11:59 p.m. These are:

  • Barangay 185 Zone 16 in Tondo
  • Barangay 374 Zone 38 in Sta. Cruz
  • Barangay 521 Zone 52 in Sampaloc
  • Barangay 628 Zone 63 in Sta. Mesa
  • Barangay 675 Zone 73 in Paco
  • Barangay 847 Zone 92 in Pandacan. 

The city also implemented a strict 30% working capacity in all government offices. As of March 15, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country is at 626,893. There 5,404 new cases confirmed on Monday, which is the highest daily tally in the past seven months.
