Construction for the Katipunan Extension, which will connect Batasan, San Mateo, and Katipunan, is 60% complete and could be done by the end of the year, public works secretary Mark Villar said February 8, Monday.

"This portion is six lanes. We're at full construction now. We're targeting delivery by the end of the year," Villar said in a video update.

The 5.7-kilometer road extension aims to decongest Commonwealth, and could be an alternate route for those coming from Rizal and Marikina. Once complete, it can save motorists up to 30 minutes of travel time, he said.

Though full opening is targeted during the tail-end of 2021, Villar said the Department of Public Works and Hiwghways is looking to open some portions or lanes as early as the second quarter.
