La Picara Has Been Ordered Closed; Here's Their Side of the Story

(SPOT.ph) La Picara has become the go-to spot for people in the Metro looking for great Spanish eats in a gorgeous but relaxed setting. If you've been meaning to eat there—they have a great outdoor deck for dining—you'll have to put your plans on hold: the BGC restaurant was closed on January 22 by the Taguig city government, supposedly for a party that had been thrown there last week by a celebrity, and the resulting violation of physical-distancing rules.

"Despite our constant effort on having strict vigilance over the social distancing and all the other protocols, some of our customers didn't follow our instructions the other night," says La Picara in an e-mail exchange with SPOT.ph. "Some young people living from social media always have this need of distorting reality so much to show how amazing and big everything is around them," they add.

Here's what went down: La Picara "had other bookings that night", and the whole night occurred without issues with the rest of customers or the mall security. "We closed at the normal time, billing out everybody by 11 [p.m.] and letting people slowly leave before the 12 a.m. curfew." The problem was that "the normal and strict setup that [a particular party] followed during the whole night—one table per person with no face to face dining—was ruined when they brought a cake out and gathered around the birthday [person]. The [party] had booked six tables, for six different groups that knew each other, and [did what they did] regardless of our demands of staying always [within] their place."

"There was a moment where they stood up to sing and had 20-plus people around him," shares the restaurant. "Even other small things that we do often, such as putting our music mixer out of its normal position inside the bar, to let some customers change the songs, was assumed as a DJ thing in some pictures due to their way to flip the reality."

One of the dishes La Picara is best known for is their winning Chili Crab Paella.

The Taguig Safe City Task Force has implemented a number of new restrictions and guidelines for the restaurant. "We will need to remain closed for a while to serve everybody better soon, which is and has been always our only goal," says La Picara. "We are working on solving and complying with all the requirements, which we want to make as soon as possible to prove our full collaboration with Taguig City. We absolutely understand them, and their actions, and we are proud to know they really check everything to make sure we have a safe environment. We are willing to help in any level and circumstance to make sure we prioritize the health and well-being of our customers."

La Picara opened in 2019, and gave Spanish classics creative and modern twists—such as adding kimchi to their croquettas and chili crab to their paella.
