Is There Finally Hope? Test Runs at LRT-2 Santolan Station Underway

(SPOT.ph) Now here's a sight folks from the east of Metro Manila have not seen since October 2019: a train running at the Santolan station of the Light Rail Transit Line 2. Yes, it's finally happening! The Light Rail Transit Authority dropped a short clip a la teaser of a "simulation test" at the Light Rail Transit Line 2's (LRT-2) east terminal on Tuesday, January 19—and we're doing our best to level our optimism here, but the caption says the test run is  "in preparation for the resumption to full line operations very soon."

A short 17 seconds—yup, at this point we'll take what we can. The test was done to make sure the "provisional power supply at the rectifier substation No. 5 for the trainsets" was in dependable working order. You might recall the fire on October 3, 2019 that led to the three east end stations—Santolan, Katipunan, Anonas—of the LRT-2 having to shut down for repairs? Well, it was that specific rectifier being tested that was the main casualty of the fire. Said three stations have been defunct since then.

The latest deadline for operations to resume according to the Light Rail Transit Authority is sometime in January 2021 (yes, this month). And it looks like they may just come through this time!

Meanwhile, the much-awaited east extension of the LRT-2 is also taking shape. This four-kilometer extension will add two stations: Emerald Station in Marikina and the Masinag Station in Antipolo. Both stations are set to begin operations in April 2021, according to the Department of Transportation
