(SPOT.ph) Due to the continued threat of COVID-19, Cebu City's local government and officials of Sinulog Foundation Inc. announced on January 7 that all physical activities of this year's Sinulog Festival are canceled. But Cebu City Vice Mayor Michael Rama said in a press conference that the much-awaited Grand Ritual Showdown will be recorded separately and broadcasted on local television and online.
"There will be no street dancing parade, no grand ritual showdown. Everything will be recorded and broadcast as live on January 17," he said.
Initially, the local government proposed to push through with the Grand Ritual Showdown at South Road Properties. There will be no audience members, but dancers would still perform for prefilming. Another proposal is that the festivities be held on another date or venue. These were opposed by police authorities due to security requirements and by local doctors because of the risk in drawing a crowd.
“We call upon everyone to please let’s not waste what we have worked for— controlling our cases with the economy starting up also. The Sinulog Festival is a very important event in our lives but for now, with coronavirus still very much around, let’s do our prayers and celebration simple and no fanfares. We look forward to 2022 where we can have the best Sinulog ever in our lifetime,” said Dr. Mary Jean Loreche, Department of Health - Central Visayas' spokesperson.
Sinulog, one of the biggest festivals in the Philippines, is both a cultural and religious celebration held every third Sunday of January in Cebu City. It honors the image of the child Jesus, Santo Niño, through a fluvial procession led by the Archdiocese of Cebu, a grand street parade where participants dressed in brightly colored clothes dance to the loud beats of drums and trumpets, and all-night partying. Similar celebrations are held in Aklan on the same weekend (Ati-Atihan Festival) and in Iloilo a week later (Dinagyang Festival).
