Keep Your Data Private: Shred That Shipping Label Before Throwing Your Parcels Away

As Christmas nears and all your 12.12 orders arrive, online shoppers were reminded on Wednesday, December 16, to dispose the packaging of parcels and shipments properly as the personal information printed on them could fall into the wrong hands and be used for malicious purposes.

In a Facebook post, the National Privacy Commission offered ways you can reuse your packaging—use it as scratch paper, roll it up and throw it in the trash bin (yelling "Kobe!" as you do it, not required), or using it to wrap leftover food—but most importantly, they said that shipping labels should be shredded before being thrown away. If shredding is not an option, recipients may shade the details such as name, address, and contact number with a black marker

"Shipping labels contain details such as name, address, and contact number. If not disposed properly, pwedeng mapunta sa o magamit ng ibang tao ang data mo," they write in their Facebook post. "Pero don't worry, maraming pwedeng gawin to ensure na protected ang data mo. For example, you can cover your details using a permanent marker. If you have the option to shred the document, better!" Of course, if you don't have a shredder, you can opt to cut the label into tiny pieces.

So, the next time you receive a package, make sure you shred or shade your details before throwing the packaging away! Better safe than sorry, right?
