Can You Take Kids to the Mall This Christmas?

Mall operators and parents need to check with local government units on the entry of minors to malls, the Department of the Interior and Local Government said Tuesday, December 2.

Local chief executives need to issue resolutions that will allow the entry of children and teens to shopping centers, Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Spokesperson Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya said.

"We're still waiting for the final recommendation from the mayors, local government units [LGUs] before it becomes official policy," he told reportr in a message.

Metro Manila will need a uniform policy on allowing minors in malls, Malaya said. This means the city mayors will have to come to a single decision regarding the matter. Areas outside the capital region also need LGU approval.

Earlier, Interior Secretary Eduardo Año said mayors and local officials will issue ordinances on allowing minors outdoors.

Malls can operate at partial capacity during the Christmas month as the government kept eased COVID-19 restrictions. Parts of the Philippines are under either the relaxed general community quarantine, or modified general community quarantine until Dec. 31.
