Beekeeping in the Metro: This City Dweller Takes Care of Bee Colonies on His Rooftop

(SPOT.ph) Mention the word beekeeper and what usually comes to mind is a person all geared up with a suit, a hat, and a netted veil to protect his/her face. More often than not, said beekeeper lives near a sprawling garden or farm far away from the busy city. But not Alexis Dela Cuesta, a beekeper with not one but two bee colonies on the rooftop of his house in Metro Manila.

Dela Cuesta' interest in urban beekeping started when he attended a seminar at the Beehive Farm and Kitchen in Batangas. On January 15, 2019, he brought home a couple of bee colonies and harvested 58 kilos of pure honey from May to June in the same year. He's also taking care of bees in Parañaque, Caloocan, and Manila. Aside from selling pure honey from their bee colonies, Dela Cuesta and his wife Sheila sell soap, shampoo, and lotion that are all made from beeswax as a natural ingredient.
