Apple Just Dropped New AirPods and They're Noise-Cancelling Headphones

(SPOT.ph) Apple released the first generation AirPodsthe initial iteration of their series of wireless listening devicesin 2016, and since then we’ve seen upgrades on the earbuds including the AirPods 2 and the AirPods Pro, released in March and October 2019, respectively. Most Apple users and tech geeks were likely expecting the tech giant’s latest rollout of listening devices to follow suit with the previous iterations, which featured small earbuds packaged in compact charging cases. To our surprise, Apple did a 180 today, December 8, and released a pair of brand new wireless over-ear headphones: Say hello to the AirPods Max!

In case you’re an iPhone or Mac user who prefers headphones to earbuds, this device could be what you’ve been waiting for all along. According to Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing Greg Joswiak, the AirPods Max brings "that magical AirPods experience to a stunning over-ear design with high-fidelity audio." That means you still get the same seamless connection to your other Apple devices and iCloud accounts, which allows fuss-free use and setup, in a larger gadget with more dynamic sound capabilities. Plus, the battery is built to last up to 20 hours in just a single use!

The AirPods Max is available in five chic colors: Silver, Space Gray, Sky Blue, Pink, and Green.

First, let’s take a look at the device’s design. We all know Apple is known for its sleek, frills-free gadgets and the AirPods Max are no different. It features a stainless-steel headband that promises strength and flexibility as well as a comfortable fit for all head shapes and sizes—and before you ask, yes, it’s adjustable. The headband is lined with a knit mesh canopy that is made to evenly distribute the gadget’s weight and reduce pressure on your head, promising comfortable wear every time.

Meanwhile, the ear cups are built to balance and distribute pressure across the ear with a unique construction that can "independently pivot and rotate to fit the unique contours of a user’s head," according to Apple’s website. Plus, the memory foam cushion on the ear cups forms a seal around the ear, creating that immersive, noise-cancelling effect when listening to music. As with previous versions of the AirPods, the AirPods Max has touch controls on the Digital Crown which allow you to adjust volume settings, pause or play audio, skip tracks, answer phone calls, and activate Siri with just the tap of a finger.

As with Apple's previous models, the AirPods Max connects to your devices via Bluetooth and will automatically link to all the devices stored on your iCloud account.

As far as audio quality, the AirPods Max features a 40-mm dynamic driver that "provides rich, deep bass, accurate mid-ranges, and crisp, clean high-frequency extension so every note can be heard." Its notable features include Adaptive EQ, which adjusts the sound to the fit and seal of the ear cushions, promising to deliver the best possible sounds for every listen, as well as Active Noise Cancellation. The ear cups are built with three outward-facing microphones to detect environmental noise as well as one microphone inside to monitor the sound reaching your ear. The noise cancellation adapts to your movement and the fit of your headphones in real time.

The AirPods Max also have a cool feature called Transparency mode (also included in 2019's AirPods Pro), which allows you to listen to essentially shut off the noise-cancelling feature and hear the environment around you while listening to music—perfect if you're using the device at work or in a public place. You can switch between the two modes (noise-cancelling and transparency) with just a single press using the noise-control button.

Last but not least, the Spatial Audio feature can place sounds virtually anywhere in a space—think about it like when you watch movies in a cinema and it sounds like the sounds are coming from behind you or on either side of you. The feature allows for a more immersive listening experience.

The AirPods Max comes with a handy Smart Case to help you carry your headphones and keep them safe from bumps and scratches.
