You Can Save Lives With This Salbabida-Inspired Font

On November 12, several areas around the Philippines were left devastated by massive flooding due to Typhoon Ulysses. Places like Marikina, Rizal, and Cagayan had residents stranded on their roofs fighting for their lives.

Since then, plenty of non-governmental organizations and even individuals have taken the initiative to hold fundraisers to help out typhoon victims. One such individual is Joanna Malinis, a graphic designer and font face creator who decided to use her skills to help out.

Malinis created a font she called "Salbabida Sans," which was inspired by the Filipino term for the flotation device. "The forms of this font mimic the inflated rubber vest or object that one can put on or hold onto to keep afloat in water," she says about the design.

Aside from taking inspiration from the lifesaver, the font's purpose is to literally save lives because all proceeds from purchases of the font in the last quarter of 2020 will be donated to victims of Typhoon Ulysses and allocated to the rebuilding of the art studio Bad Student. Bad Student is a Manila-based riso art studio whose living quarters and equipment were destroyed by the flood.

The font costs U.S. $5 or P242 but you can increase the price if you'd like to donate more. To purchase, visit tinyurl.com/salbabida or check Malinis's full Facebook post for more details.
