Amid all the posts of massive floods, destruction, calls (and answers) for help on Twitter right now, one trending topic seems to be an outlier: the name of former Miss Universe Catriona Gray. Gray is currently in Colombia as one of the judges in the country's upcoming Miss Universe pageant. One Instagram user asked why Gray was abroad while the Philippines goes through one calamity after the other as a comment to one of Gray's recent posts, to which Gray responded with, "[This] invitation was extended months ago and even though I’m away, I’ve been doing my part in working with @philredcross since the day of the typhoon to provide aid and relief to the affected areas. Thanks for your concern."
A report by the Philippine Daily Inquirer regarding the exchange has since gained traction on the local Twitterverse—with parallels being drawn to how people reacted to another public figure's absence amid Ulysses. Folks online came to the defense of the former Miss Universe by pointing out that her physical presence in the country couldn't be expected of her.
