McDonald's Is Launching a Meatless Burger in the U.S.

(SPOT.ph) It can be easy to feel excluded from the fast-food scene when you don't eat meat—but a growing number of brands are bridging the gap to cater to those who prefer plant-based food. McDonald's U.S. has announced the launch of a plant-based burger dubbed the McPlant, which they'll be testing in several markets in 2021.

The McPlant consists of a juicy, plant-based patty on a warm sesame-seed bun with all their classic toppings. According to a statement, the burger was created "for McDonald's, by McDonald's" and has the kind of craveable McDonald's flavor their customers love. "There are other plant-based burgers out there," they write, "But the McPlant delivers our iconic taste in a sink-your-teeth-in (and wipe-your-mouth) kind of sandwich." In the future, they could also be extending the McPlant line to include other plant-based subs for chicken and breakfast sandwiches.

In 2019, McDonald's also tested what they called the P.L.T. Burger (that stands for plant-lettuce-tomato) with faux-meat brand Beyond Meat in Canada, and the test ended without any further news about a partnership. While McDonald's has not yet revealed the supplier for the upcoming McPlant line, a Beyond Meat spokesperson said in a statement to CNBC that they co-created the plant-based patty used in the line.

McDonald’s is an American fast-food chain that began in California in 1940, and has since been a go-to for burgers, fries, fried chicken, and more.
