LOOK: Quarantine Violators Clean Up City Streets

(SPOT.ph) Around 16 folks in Iloilo City were made to render community service for violating quarantine rules. They were seen quietly sweeping sidewalks, taking out weeds, trimming plants, and more at the city's many riverside parks and open-air spots in pictures uploaded by the local government to Facebook on November 9. The 16 or so violators were caught without a face mask or covering in public areas, according to the Iloilo City Government Beautification Program Facebook page. Aside from a fine, violators must serve eight hours of community work for three consecutive days, after which they are given a certicificate of completion. This new community service rule is part of the amendments to Regulation Ordinance No. 2020-061, said the Iloilo City Government in a post

Aside from making sure violators will remember to wear their masks the next time around, the new arrangement means extra hands to help with Iloilo City's ongoing beautification program. Adding a whole lot of green to the city is the dream; the program has seen unused sidewalks along Muelle Loney Road transformed into mini-forests full of lush trees and there are plans of putting up a "Green Tunnel" along the bike lane on Diversion Road, among others.

Quarantine violations—and the respective punishments—became a hot topic once again after news of Debold Sinas' promotion to head of the Philippine National Police broke on November 9. The general became infamous after the controversial mañanita incident at the height of the quarantine in May. Meanwhile, 69,834 quarantine violators were arrested as of July
