Anaconda reboot starring Jack Black and Paul Rudd unveils a batch of character posters

Five years ago, Sony’s Columbia Pictures announced that they were developing a reboot / reimagining of the 1997 “nature run amok” thriller Anaconda (watch it HERE), with the intention of “taking what was a simple and relatively cheap programmer with a B-movie concept and event-izing it in scope and budget.” Back in 2023, we heard that Tom Gormican would be writing and directing the film as his follow-up to the well-received action comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Then Gormican’s Anaconda reboot, which takes a meta approach, made its way through production with a cast that includes Jack Black (School of Rock), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Thandiwe Newton (Westworld), Daniela Melchior (The Suicide Squad), Steve Zahn (Joy Ride), Selton Mello (I’m Still Here), and Ione Skye (Zodiac). The film is aiming for a December 25th theatrical release, and with that date right around the corner, a batch of character posters have been unveiled! You can check them out at the bottom of this article.

Synopsis and Characters

The new Anaconda movie “involves a group of friends facing mid-life crises who are remaking their favorite movie from their youth. They head to the rainforest only to find themselves into a fight for their lives against natural disasters, giant snakes and violent criminals.“ Gormican wrote the screenplay with Kevin Ettin.

Black plays an “erstwhile director, a man stuck in his job as a wedding videographer,” with Rudd playing “an actor who did a stint on a cop show but sees his Hollywood dreams slipping further and further away.” Newton and Zahn play the pair’s childhood friends who join them on this adventure, with Mello playing a Brazilian animal wrangler and Skye playing the wife of Black’s character.

The original Anaconda movie, which starred Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, and Jon Voight, spawned a handful of sequels, including Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid, Anaconda 3: Offspring, and Anacondas: Trail of Blood, plus the crossover Lake Placid vs. Anaconda. There was also a Chinese remake, which centered on a group of circus performers as they battle a giant snake.

Taye Diggs and Tamar Braxton thriller Stepfather isn’t a remake of The Stepfather, but sounds like it

Back in 1987, Terry O’Quinn gave an awesome performance as the titular character in director Joseph Ruben’s classic horror thriller The Stepfather. Audiences were were so shaken up by O’Quinn, the film spawned two sequels – 1989’s Stepfather II: Make Room for Daddy (which O’Quinn returned for) and 1992’s Stepfather 3 (where Robert Wightman took over the role) – and remained a popular enough title two decades later that it received the remake treatment in 2009. The upcoming thriller Stepfather, which stars Taye Diggs (The Best Man) and Tamar Braxton (Braxton Family Values) and is expected to premiere on the Tubi streaming service in 2026, isn’t officially another remake of The Stepfather… but it sure sounds like it.

Familiar Story

Variety reports that Diggs is playing Darnell, a survivor of childhood abuse whose unresolved trauma turns into a twisted quest to recreate the perfect household he was once denied. When Darnell’s new family doesn’t meet his ideal expectations, he takes charge by eliminating them to start the search again for his ideal family.

Production is already underway in Los Angeles, with Chris Stokes (You Got Served) directing from a screenplay he wrote with singer Marques Houston, who had an acting role in You Got Served. Here’s the official synopsis: After years of eradicating any family that falls short of perfection, Darnell ( Diggs) believes his new wife Asia (Braxton) and her daughters might finally be the real deal. That is, until tensions rise and they uncover his deadly pattern. Now, getting rid of them won’t be as easy as he planned. Yep, this sounds exactly like The Stepfather, but with more than one stepdaughter.

Behind the Scenes

Another previous Stokes and Houston collaboration was a Tubi thriller called The Stepmother, which has gotten two sequels, so it’s easy to see why they would move on to a Stepfather movie.

Stepfather is being produced by Footage Films Studios, with Stokes and Houston serving as executive producers.

What do you think of the duo behind The Stepmother reteaming for a Stepfather movie that sounds a lot like The Stepfather, but isn’t meant to be a remake? Share your thoughts on this one by leaving a comment below.

Tim Burton: Life in the Line Review: A Brilliant Doc On The Filmmaker’s Illustrious Career

PLOT: Showcases how Tim Burton brings his visions to life using his ability to meld the ominous and frightful with a sense of whimsy.

REVIEW: It can be very difficult to encapsulate someone’s entire life in a documentary. So it’s a bit of a relief that Tim Burton: Life in the Line is over four hours long and really takes its time with such a prolific director’s career. Broken down into four episodes, this is something that any fan of the filmmaker will want to check out, not only for the highlight of so many great works, but for some insight from his collaborators that really gets down to who Tim is as a person.

Tim Burton: Life in the Line spans Burton’s entire life and career, getting into the minute details of what makes the filmmaker so unique. It’s fascinating to see how driven he was at a young age, and it’s clear that he was always destined for great things. Nearly every single movie of his gets some sort of spotlight, and the longer runtime allows them to really flourish and not just be glossed over. There’s a certain importance put on most of his projects, and each gets room to breathe. There are some films at the tail end of his career that don’t get quite as much insight, but I think that’s more due to the massive shadow that his other films cast over pop culture as a whole. The narrative moves seamlessly from story to story, mostly chronological, but always flowing with what the conversation dictates.

Burton himself doesn’t appear in the doc, but damn near every single person you could think of that has some kind of connection with the filmmaker does. Johnny Depp, Danny DeVito, Helena Bonham Carter, Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Christopher Walken, and so many more all tell their tales of Burton. While seasoned Burton fans will have no doubt heard some of these stories, it’s how the interviews are presented that really make them feel special. These aren’t just standard interviews and it genuinely feels like these people are opening up about their friend versus being interviewed about them. This is a credit to director Tara Wood, who conducted the sit-downs (watch our own interview with Wood embedded at the bottom of this article). They all clearly have such a love for the man that it comes through on screen.

I think people are really going to be surprised with what an open book Johnny Depp is, telling some very fun stories that I don’t believe have been told elsewhere. Often, actors of his level of fame are quite guarded, so it’s fascinating to see him be so open in this. And given how much his career has been tied to Burton, he really brings the documentary together in a meaningful way. Helena Bonham Carter is also very open about her relationship with Burton, and it’s clear there’s still a deep respect there. The only real notable people that don’t show up are Catherine O’Hara, Burton’s ex Lisa Marie, and his most recent partner, Monica Bellucci. Which, honestly, makes sense for the latter two.

Those who are hoping for any kind of negative light to be cast on Burton with a “gotcha” piece should probably look elsewhere. This is really just about giving the director his due and talking about his influence on so many people and pop culture as a whole.

Tim Burton’s style is one that’s really hard to replicate and the film does a great job of evoking that same feel, with a great score and some truly Burton-esque graphics. The stories are always presented in such vivid detail due to the animations and behind the scenes footage at play. I’m a sucker for any kind of documentary that does a deep dive on a filmmaker or a movie franchise, so Life in the Line was right up my alley. I’ve always been a big Tim Burton fan and was endlessly fascinated by the stories being told. This is an absolute must for anyone that’s a fan of the director. By the end, you’ll just appreciate him even moreso.

Tim Burton: Life in the Line is currently available to purchase HERE.

FULL DISCLOSURE: JoBlo himself, CEO Berge Garabedian, is an executive producer on this project. However, this review is entirely independent, and no instructions have been given to the reviewer.

Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk’s novel Survivor is getting a film adaptation from Daniel Brown

In 1999, the same year 20th Century Fox brought a film adaptation of the Chuck Palahniuk novel Fight Club to the screen, a new Palahniuk novel – called Survivor – reached book store shelves. So Fox picked up the film rights to that one, too. They just never made the movie. As Palahniuk explained to Digital Spy, “David Fincher (director of Fight Club) was really pushing [Fox] in their development and they’d gotten Jake Paltrow – Gwyneth’s brother – to write a screenplay and people were very happy with that. They’d started to cast it but then 9/11 happened and that seemed to harpoon all kinds of transgressive comedies.” In 2008, the rights were acquired by I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence, who wrote the screenplay and said it would be his next project after I Am Legend… but it wasn’t. He never got his Survivor adaptation into production and the rights slipped out of his hands. Now, Deadline reports of a third attempt to get a Survivor adaptation going, this time by writer/director Daniel Brown.

Brown made his feature directorial debut with Your Lucky Day, an action thriller starring the late Angus Cloud, which received a theatrical release in November 2023.

What is Survivor about?

With this film, Brown will be bringing the following story to the screen: Tender Branson ― last surviving member of the so-called “Creedish Death Cult” ― is dictating his incredible life story into the flight recorder of Flight 2039, cruising on autopilot at 39,000 feet somewhere over the Pacific Ocean. He is all alone in the plane, which will shortly reach terminal velocity and crash into the vast Australian outback. Before it does, he will unfold the tale of his journey from an obedient Creedish child and humble domestic servant to an ultra-buffed, steroid- and collagen-packed media messiah, author of a best-selling autobiography, Saved from Salvation, and the even better selling Book of Very Common Prayer (The Prayer to Delay Orgasm, The Prayer to Prevent Hair Loss, The Prayer to Silence Car Alarms). He’ll even share his insight that “the only difference between suicide and martyrdom is press coverage,” and deny responsibility for the Tender Branson Sensitive Materials Landfill ― a 20,000-acre repository for the nation’s outdated pornography. Among other matters both bizarre and trenchant. Palahniuk’s novel is described as being “a satire on the wages of fame and the bedrock lunacy of the modern world.”

Production

The film adaptation is being produced by Ryan Rettig and Miles David Romney for Community Garden and financier V42, along with Mel Turner and Axel Paton of Ground Control. Filming is expected to take place in Auckland, New Zealand sometime in early 2026.

Here’s hoping that Daniel Brown will have better luck with Survivor than Jake Paltrow and Francis Lawrence did. So far, the only Palahniuk novel other than Fight Club to get the film treatment is Choke. Directed by Clark Gregg, that film was released in 2008.

Have you read the Chuck Palahniuk novel Survivor, and are you interested in seeing a film adaptation? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

The ‘Burbs TV series starring Keke Palmer gets a teaser trailer

In the final months of 2024, the Peacock streaming service gave a straight-to-series order for The ‘Burbs, a contemporary TV series adaptation of the 1989 movie of the same name (which starred Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher). The eight-episode season made its way through production so quietly, I had forgotten that this was even happening – but today, a teaser trailer for the show has dropped online, along with the announcement that all eight episodes will be available to watch on Peacock as of Sunday, February 8th. Check out the teaser trailer in the embed above!

Cast and synopsis

Keke Palmer (Nope) stars in and executive produces the series and is joined in the cast by Jack Whitehall (Jungle Cruise), Julia Duffy (Newhart), Paula Pell (Girls5eva), Mark Proksch (What We Do In The Shadows), Kapil Talwalkar (Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist), Haley Joel Osment (Tusk), RJ Cyler (The Harder They Fall), Justin Kirk (Weeds), Kyrie McAlpin (Cheaper by the Dozen), Danielle Kennedy (Man on the Inside), and Randy Oglesby (For All Mankind).

Celeste Hughey (Palm Royale, Dead to Me) is writing and executive producing the series. Set in present-day suburbia, The ‘Burbs follows a young couple, with Palmer playing the wife, returning to the husband’s (Whitehall) childhood home. Their world is upended when new neighbors move in next door, bringing old secrets of the cul-de-sac to light, and new deadly threats shatter the illusion of their quiet little neighborhood.

Same filming location as the original

In addition to Palmer and Hughey, executive producers on the show include Brian Grazer, Kristen Zolner, and Natalie Berkus for Imagine Entertainment, Seth MacFarlane, Erica Huggins, and Aimee Carlson for Fuzzy Door, and Rachel Shukert. Dana Olsen, the writer of the 1989 film, Amy Aniobi, Zora Bikangaga, and Neil Reynolds serve as co-executive producers. Nzingha Stewart (Daisy Jones & The Six) directed the first episode and is another executive producer. UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, is the studio behind the series.

Filming took place in Los Angeles at the same location as the original film, the backlot of Universal Studios Hollywood.

The original The ‘Burbs was directed by Joe Dante. When asked for his reaction to the TV series announcement, Dante said, “I think my actual comment was, ‘How are they going to make a whole TV series out of that story?’ As opposed to, ‘I want to be the one to do it. ’Good luck to them. It’s kind a one-off story…It’s always nice when things have a shelf life.

I don’t expect this series to live up to the original film, but it could be fun – and, judging by the teaser trailer, it sure looks like The ‘Burbs. Will you be watching this show? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Bryan Fuller was stunned that his monster movie Dust Bunny got an R rating

Two years ago, Hannibal TV series creator Bryan Fuller went into production on the family-oriented horror project Dust Bunny, which marks his feature directorial debut. Now, Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions are gearing up to send Dust Bunny out into theatres on December 12th – and on its way to the big screen, the film, which Fuller envisioned as being a gateway horror movie for younger viewers and a throwback to the family horror films of the ’80s, received a surprising rating from the MPA: it’s rated R for some violence. During an interview with The Horror Queers podcast, Fuller said he was “stunned” when he heard of the rating.

The story of Dust Bunny involves a 10-year-old girl who joins forces with her hit man neighbor to confront each other’s monsters. Here’s the synopsis: Ten-year-old Aurora has a mysterious neighbor (Mads Mikkelsen) who kills real-life monsters. He’s a hit man for hire. So, when Aurora needs help killing the monster she believes ate her entire family, she procures his services. Suspecting that her parents may have fallen victim to assassins gunning for him, Aurora’s neighbor guiltily takes the job. Now, to protect her, he’ll need to battle an onslaught of assassins ― and accept that some monsters are real. The film stars Hannibal himself Mads Mikkelsen, along with Sigourney Weaver (Alien), David Dastmalchian (Late Night With the Devil) and Sophie Sloan (Chemistry of Death). Weaver told New York Social Diary that her character is “not so nice,” despite having “really beautiful costumes.”

Fuller produced the film with Entertainment One and Thunder Road‘s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee.

Speaking with The Horror Queers, Fuller said (with thanks to Bloody Disgusting for the transcription), “This is an R-rated film. We were stunned, too. The MPA is notorious about being really hard on independent movies and a little more lax on studio films. … I mean, M3GAN murdered children and ripped their ears off and slaughtered somebody with a paper cutter, and that was PG-13. [Dust Bunny has] no nudity. There’s no foul language. You know, it’s a conversation with the MPAA We got an R rating. They said what put us over the edge was the non-lethal toothbrush injury. I thought we were making a movie for the whole family, and I definitely wanted it to be a gateway experience where 10-year-olds would see this movie and say, ‘Yes, give me more.‘ That was certainly my experience seeing The Wizard of Oz and having my appetite whetted. And then, seeing Alien when I was nine years old and seeing Black Christmas when I was seven, and those types of things that I loved. I wasn’t traumatized by them. I was just excited to see people survive their stories. … I thought this was a family film, and so many people who have seen it feel like it’s a family film. I hope it’s a lot of kids’ first R-rated movie that they get to see and experience. I would tell adults, ‘Look, if you’re on the fence, see it first, and you’ll see that it’s a really fun, rompy movie about a child, who is wonderful in the film and a great heroine and protagonist, that can be aspirational for other children her age.‘

JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray got the chance to watch Dust Bunny at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) a while back and gave it a 6/10 review, saying the movie is “a lot of fun. Mikkelsen and Sloan’s chemistry, combined with Fuller’s eccentric vision, makes it feel refreshingly original.”

Full Moon launches a poll to let fans choose their next ten productions

Filmmaker Charles Band has a career that stretches back into the 1970s, and over the decades he has brought more than four hundred genre movies into the world. He’s best known for launching the company Full Moon, which got its start with the classic Puppet Master back in 1989. All these years later, Full Moon is still going strong – and it looks like 2026 is going to be a great year for the company. They have just launched a poll that will allow fans to choose their next ten productions!

The poll can be found at THIS LINK. Here’s the information: Full Moon screams into 2026 with an impressive slate of wild, untamed new horror and dark fantasy feature films! Bloodthirsty fiends, damsels in distress, high concepts and hideous creatures are all over every inch of these new in-development movies and we want YOU to choose which TEN of these perverse pictures we are going to make this year! Check out the teaser art for the slate and VOTE! The top-ten most popular titles will go to camera starting NEXT MONTH in Cleveland, LA and Italy! Get ready for an INSANE year of BERSERK new movies from FULL MOON!

The teaser art can be seen below and offers fourteen different projects to choose from. Full Moon fans might recognize some of these titles as potential projects we’ve heard about before, while others are new possibilities. Here’s the lineup: Models vs. Werewolves, Svengali 2026, The Grim Rapper, The Cyber Bride, Sirens of Seduction, The Haunting of Eleanor, Lost Girl’s Private Diary, Dungeon Dolls, Robotica, Buried Secrets, Catacombs of Horror, Terror Express, The Haunted Heads of Doctor Decapto, and Subhuman. The plan is for Full Moon to make ten of these movies in 2026, while the other four will have to wait for another year. But which ten will be made? That’s up to you!

As Band says in the video embedded above, you don’t have to choose ten movies to participate in the poll. If you pick less, your vote will still be accepted – and everyone who participates in the poll will get a $10 gift certificate to use at the Full Moon shop website. Band also mentions which concepts and titles he’s particularly excited about: Buried Secrets, The Grim Rapper, Models vs. Werewolves, and Sirens of Seduction (which would give him the chance to make a new “shrunken heads” movie). Here’s further information on each project:

Models vs. Werewolves: Five young models go to an AirBnb in the woods for a full moon that comes once every five hundred years. What starts off as the perfect girl’s trip quickly becomes a nightmare as a pack of ancient werewolves are awoken by the new moon…

Svengali 2026: When Ellen and Dawn arrive in Italy in search of Ellen’s sister Katherine, they wind up in the looming, gothic home of Ivan, a doctor who has broken Katherine’s will and controls her completely. The women are then put to a series of increasingly erotic tests, forced to pleasure Ivan and each other, with Katherine’s body and soul hanging in the balance!

The Grim Rapper: When a greedy record executive uses AI to resurrect a murdered hip-hop legend, the rapper’s vengeful spirit returns with a cursed boom box, trapping a grieving lover and her friends inside a recording studio where the dead hunt the living one beat at a time.

The Cyber Bride: Jane Kendall is a brilliant young scientist who’s obsessed with her latest invention — a seven-foot tall humanoid robot with super-human strength, speed, and intelligence — and near-human emotions. Unfortunately, Jane has failed to realize that her unstoppable creation has become obsessed as well — with her.

Sirens of Seduction: For a price, one can approach the mysterious Professor Grantham, who has spent a lifetime crafting his demonic Sirens — beautiful female heads carved from alabaster, ruby, and crystal and draped in silk. Whisper the proper words into their tiny ears and they will fly, sing, kiss — and kill.

The Haunting of Eleanor: A painter rents a coastal castle for inspiration but soon discovers a hot Victorian ghost couple wants her to complete their love triangle. Sounds fun until the jealousy kicks in. They seduce her into their games, but as the haunting gets more intense and blood spills, she realizes choosing one means losing herself forever.

Lost Girl’s Private Diary: A struggling writer finds an old diary written in blood, chronicling a Victorian girl’s supernatural affairs. When she decides to steal the stories for her own novel, she accidentally completes an ancient ritual through the transcription. Now skeletal demons are crawling into her world, demanding payment in flesh.

Dungeon Dolls: Three beautiful women wake up in a basement dungeon, finding themselves dressed like life-sized dolls. An insane gamekeeper in a mask makes the scene, challenging the girls to escape his “Toy Box” escape room through a series of terrifying tasks that indulge his twisted perversions.

Robotica: Two security guards working the midnight shift in an adult toy company find themselves the target of a half-dismantled and severely malfunctioning female sex doll prototype named Robotica.

Buried Secrets: The Lost Catacombs of Bomarzo are rumored to hold a fortune in jewels for anyone brave enough to dig them up. When a daring (or maybe foolhardy) group of young Adventurers dare to unearth the hidden graves they manage to find the treasure — but also awaken a buried demon who’s looking for blood — and for someone to take his place in the darkness.

Catacombs of Horror: In a remote Italian village, a young traveler falls for a charming local, only to discover that the catacombs beneath his family’s estate hide an ancient creature the villagers have secretly appeased with unsuspecting tourists for generations — and she’s been marked as its next offering. Worse still, the man she’s been sharing a bed with is its devoted high priest.

Terror Express: A murder-mystery bachelorette party aboard a luxury train takes a wicked turn when the bridesmaids open an antique puzzle box, unleashing three seductive incubi who charm their way into the ladies’ sleeper cars, secretly plotting to drain their life force and become mortal once again.

The Haunted Heads of Doctor Decapto: A disgraced medical researcher has been hired to assist a mysterious Doctor who lives in a remote forgotten mansion in the wilderness. The Elderly Doctor DeCapto has devoted his life to a bizarre experiment — he shows his new assistant his collection of human heads — heads which are somehow still alive and aware — and also eternally young. Yes, DeCapto has discovered the secret of eternal youth, but, alas, it’s a very limited “secret,” as it only works on disembodied heads. But surely his new assistant can solve the puzzle. And if not — there’ll be a new head on the shelf…

Subhuman: When telepath Kyle jumps into the mind of something that looks like a woman but is not quite human, the female fiend imprisons Kyle in his apartment and subjects him to physical and mental tortures. The only hope for help comes from his neighbor Heather, and with her at his side, Kyle must come face to face with his own twisted impulses if he hopes to defeat the ageless, evil woman… the SUBHUMAN!

Band will be directing some of these movies himself. Those where he’s not at the helm will be made by trusted collaborators like William Butler (Gingerdead Man sequels, Demonic Toys follow-ups), Chris Alexander (Necropolis: Legion, Parasite Lady), and Brooks Davis (The Gingerweed Man, Bring Her to Me).

I have been a dedicated Full Moon fan almost since the start and I’m always eager to hear their latest plans, so I will definitely be voting in this poll. Will you? Take a look at the 2026 lineup teaser art, then let us know by leaving a comment below.

The hardest part for me is clicking “No” on any of these, because I would gladly watch every single one of them.
