Sonic the Hedgehog Director Isn't Involved in the Third Film or Any Spinoffs - Yet

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 director Jeff Fowler confirmed he isn't currently on board for the video game adaptation's sequel or spinoffs -- officially, at least.

"Nothing would make me happier [than to direct Sonic 3]," Fowler told Collider. "I’m not officially involved with any of the additional films yet, but I’m so proud of this movie, I’m so proud of the first movie, so excited for fans to see it. They’re really incredible movies to make."

Paramount Pictures announced Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in February. The distributor also revealed that a Paramount+ spinoff series headlined by Knuckles the Echidna was currently in development. "The world of Sonic the Hedgehog has been capturing imaginations for decades, and we are thrilled to stretch the limits of what this franchise is capable of with world-class offerings both on the big screen and for Sonic fans at home," Sonic producer Neal Moritz said at the time.

Another of the film's producers, Toby Ascher, later confirmed that Sonic 3 and the Knuckles show were part of plans to expand the franchise into a fully-fledged shared universe. "We’re creating a Sonic cinematic universe, so we knew we were going to add characters, like Tails and Knuckles; new to the films but beloved by gamers all over the world," he said. Leaked footage of Sonic the Hedgehog 2's post-credits scene has since backed up Ascher's comments, teasing plot points with potentially huge knock-on effects for the wider Sonic franchise.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has garnered positive early reviews, which should boost Paramount's confidence in the Sonic cinematic universe's future. If this positive critical buzz translates into a strong box office performance, there's also a good chance Fowler will be invited back to direct the film's sequel. The original Sonic movie made $319.72 million on an estimated $90 million budget.

The filmmaker recently shared his top tip for making a successful video game movie. "I think the trick to making movies based off of video games is to completely forget that you’re making a movie based off a video game," he said. "Because I think all movies are about character no matter where they come from." Fowler went on to add that catering to casual viewers as well as hardcore fans was important, as well.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 sprints into theaters on April 8.
