Weird Al Reveals He Wrote Half a Dozen Songs For a Musical Episode of Star Wars Detours

"Weird Al" Yankovic recently revealed the amount of work he put into the unaired Star Wars Detours series.

Speaking on the The George Lucas Talk Show, Yankovic said, "We were working on a Star Wars musical that was a three season show and we were writing songs and all of a sudden it was like yeah, um this is not going to happen," in response to an off-handed reference to Star Wars Detours. When asked about any specifics regarding the series, Yankovic replied, "I don't know that I'm allowed. There were at least a half a dozen or more songs as part of the musical, and the various characters in the show. We actually recorded them singing their songs, and that was about a week before we found out that the show was not happening."

Though Yankovic couldn't divulge any major secrets about the music that he produced for the show, he did say that, "I'm pretty sure they were all original compositions." Yankovic also stated that, "I think probably most of the principal actors in the series were involved."

Star Wars Detours is an unaired CGI-animated comedy series that would have served as an official parody of its own franchise. The series covered the events that took place between the prequel and original Star Wars trilogies, with 39 episodes having been produced by Lucasfilm Animation alongside Robot Chicken creators Seth Green and Matthew Senreich. Despite previously released footage being lauded by fans, Lucasfilm postponed the release of the series in 2013. This came shortly after Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm and the Star Wars franchise the previous year, with all indications since then pointing towards the series having been relegated to the confines of Development Hell.

Yankovic's career as Weird Al began shortly after his portrayal of comedy radio personality Dr. Demento back in 1976, which launched his career. In the years since Yankovic has sold more than 12 million albums of parody songs and appeared in dozens of films and television shows. He has most recently produced and co-written his own upcoming biopic Weird: The Al Yankovic Story starring Daniel Ratcliffe, which does not yet have a release date.

Yankovic is credited as the bounty hunter android 4-LOM in Star Wars Detours, which also included Donald Faison (Scrubs), Joel McHale (Community), as well as Billy Dee Williams in a reprisal of his iconic role of Lando Calrissian who first appeared in 1980's The Empire Strikes Back.
