While Thor: Love and Thunder is only months away from its July premiere, director Taika Waititi revealed that it's not yet finished.
Waititi confirmed the status of the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel in an interview with Variety on the Film Independent Spirit Awards red carpet. "It's still not finished," said Waititi, when asked about Thor: Love and Thunder. "It comes out in July, so probably the end of June [laughs]. Probably like a day before the premiere [laughs]. That's how we do it."
Waititi, who co-wrote and directed Thor: Love and Thunder, recently discussed the similarities shared by the film and its predecessor, Thor: Ragnarok. The filmmaker insisted that "the energy and the intention [of Thor: Love and Thunder] is all still the same" as that of his last MCU movie, noting that the only major difference between the two productions was the presence of additional cast members -- like Natalie Portman, Christian Bale and Chris Pratt -- on the set.
Despite the two movies' apparent similarities, Waititi also promised fans that Thor: Love and Thunder will be even more outrageous than Ragnarok. "It's crazier. I’ll tell you what's different," teased Waititi. "There'll be far more emotion in this film. And a lot more love. And a lot more thunder. And a lot more Thor, if you’ve seen the photos."
Waititi described how he landed the directing gig on Thor: Ragnarok, admitting that he convinced Marvel Studios he had the filmmaking chops to helm a blockbuster by lying. "Say yes to everything. 'Absolutely, I can do that. I won't let you down,'" he deadpanned. "It's like getting any job. If you want a job, you’ve got to lie. You've got to fake it." Thor: Ragnarok went on to become a massive critical and commercial success, with many fans considering it the high-point of the God of Thunder's solo series.
Waititi was also less than truthful with fans when he proclaimed a supposedly official Thor: Love and Thunder poster was a fake. At the time, Waititi dismissed the image as "so bad" while also joking that he wished he'd made it himself. Nevertheless, following Waititi's remarks reports emerged that seemed to confirm the poster was indeed an authentic piece of licensed merchandise.
Thor: Love and Thunder arrives in cinemas on July 8.
