The latest One Piece game has been revealed.
The Straw Hat Pirates' newest interactive adventure will be entitled One Piece Odyssey, and will feature RPG-style gameplay. The game is being developed by ILCA, who previously worked with Nintendo and Game Freak to create Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, which were released for the Nintendo Switch in 2021. The trailer suggests that all of the main members of the Straw Hat Pirate crew will be playable, including Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, Nami and Usopp. The game is scheduled to be released in 2022 and is being developed for the Sony PlayStation 5, Microsoft Xbox X|S and Windows PCs via Steam. Notably, while a last generation version will be released for the PlayStation 4, a port for the Xbox One was not announced.
The new game will feature a story and character designs from series creator Eiichiro Oda. In a statement posted at the start of the trailer, Oda revealed that the game appears to have been in development for quite sometime. "I thought to myself - Wasn't it like 3 years ago when I designed the characters?," the author said. "But when I actually saw the game - Wow! It felt like I was watching a movie. What incredible immersion," Oda added.
Odyssey will also feature an original score from veteran video game composer Motoi Sakuraba, who is best known for his work on games such as Mario Tennis and the Dark Souls series, as well as Namco Bandai's own Tales RPG franchise.
The game's reveal was just one of several big One Piece announcements made on March 28; Netflix revealed that Red-Haired Shanks, the pirate captain who gave Luffy his iconic straw hat and inspired the hero to take on the pirate's life, will be part of its upcoming live-action reboot of the series. The live-action show is currently filming in Cape Town, South Africa. The producers of the upcoming One Piece Film: Red also revealed a new poster for the movie, which features a better look at the new female character that Oda designed for the film.
One Piece Odyssey is being developed to celebrate the upcoming 25th anniversary of the series. Luffy's quest to become the Pirate King first kicked off in the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump in 1997, and in the decades since, Oda's story has become the best-selling manga series of all time, with approximately half-a-billion copies in circulation around the world.
