Jamie Lee Curtis wants to appear in Netflix's new live-action One Piece series.
As reported by Anime News Network, the Halloween and Knives Out star reiterated during a red carpet interview at this year's Academy Awards that she wants to play a part in the new reboot of Eiichiro Oda's beloved pirate manga. Curtis told hosts Emily Uribe and Juju Green that ideally, she would want to portray Nico Robin in the series, but now she thinks she may be too old for that role. Instead, she thinks she should play the role of Kureha, whom Curtis describes as "wizened old crone lady." The character is the mentor of Tony Tony Chopper, whom the star says is her favorite character. The Golden Globe-winning actor also revealed that she is friends with Brina Palencia, the actor who provides Chopper's English voice in the dub of the anime.
Curtis' daughter, Ruby Guest, previously appeared on a One Piece podcast, where she discussed her mother's One Piece fandom. "My mom loves Kureha. I would be 100% for it and I honestly, since Netflix is doing the live-action adaptation, I would highly recommend her to pull some strings to see if she can," Guest said. Curtis recently revealed that she will cosplay a World of Warcraft character as she officiates Guest's upcoming wedding.
The live-action One Piece series began filming in Cape Town, South Africa earlier this year. The series will star star Iñaki Godoy (Go, Youth!) as the the straw-hatted hero Monkey D. Luffy, Taz Skylar (Boiling Point) as Sanji, Mackenyu (Chihayafuru) as the swordsman Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd (Fear Street) as the fashionable Nami and Jacob Romero Gibson (Greenleaf) as Usopp. Netflix announced another addition to the cast on March 28, Peter Gadiot, who will be playing the role of Red-Haired Shanks, the charismatic pirate captain who inspires Luffy to take up a life on the high seas. Gadiot is best known for playing Cyrus in ABC's Once Upon A Time in Wonderland.
The new series is being produced by Netflix and Tomorrow Pictures, the studio behind the short-lived live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop, which premiered on Netflix last fall. Steve Maeda, who previously worked on The X-Files and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Matt Owens are serving as the show's head writers and showrunners, while series creator Eiichiro Oda is the new project's executive producer.
