Disney+ Confirms a Cheaper, Ad-Supported Subscription Option Is On the Way

Disney+ will add a cheaper, ad-supported option to the streaming service.

Disney has announced an ad-supported subscription option for its Disney+ streaming service, which will be available in addition to the service without ads. This new option is expected to arrive later in 2022, with plans for it to be available internationally by 2023. Further details, including pricing and official launch date, have not yet been announced.

"Expanding access to Disney+ to a broader audience at a lower price point is a win for everyone - consumers, advertisers, and our storytellers," said Kareem Daniel, Chairman, Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution. "More consumers will be able to access our amazing content. Advertisers will be able to reach a wider audience, and our storytellers will be able to share their incredible work with more fans and families."

The ad-supported offering is also a part of the company's overall goal to reach 230-260 million Disney+ subscribers by 2024. By the end of 2021, Disney+ had garnered a total of 129.8 million worldwide subscribers, exceeding its growth expectations overall. This was an increase that was partially attributed to major end-of-year releases like The Beatles: Get Back and Marvel Studios' Hawkeye. That being said, the streaming service's choice to bundle it and ESPN+ with the Hulu With Live TV service earned Disney+ another 2 million subscribers in the United States.

"Since its launch, advertisers have been clamoring for the opportunity to be part of Disney+ and not just because there’s a growing demand for more streaming inventory," said Rita Ferro, President, Advertising, Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution. "Disney+ with advertising will offer marketers the most premium environment in streaming with our most beloved brands, Disney, Pixar, Star Wars, Marvel and National Geographic. I can’t wait to share more with advertisers at the Upfront."

In November 2021, The Walt Disney Company announced that it would be spending over $30 billion in 2022 on Disney+, film and television content. This includes the expansion of Disney+'s direct-to-consumer streaming library with the combination of Hulu and ESPN+.

Recently, Disney+ confirmed that it had officially acquired Netflix's Marvel Television series -- Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders and The Punisher -- which will all become available to stream on the service on March 16. They will be joined by the ABC original series Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on the same day. With the addition of these more adult-orientated series, Disney+ was forced to reevaluate its parental controls, for which updates will begin rolling out as the Marvel Television series make their way onto the service.
