Netflix debuted a new trailer for the second season of Bridgerton.
While the first season of the hit series concentrated on the romance between Daphne Bridgerton and the Duke of Hastings, the second season will instead focus on the Bridgerton family's eldest son, Anthony. Following the events of the first season, Anthony begins a courtship with debutante Edwina Sharma. However, Edwina's judgmental older sister, Kate, sets out to prove that Anthony is merely pursuing her sister in order to fulfill his familial duties as a viscount, and she believes he will not fulfill Edwina's dreams of finding true love. Things get complicated when Kate's attempts to disprove Anthony's worth backfire and she ends up developing feelings for the young nobleman herself.
Season 2 of the series will star Jonathan Bailey (Crashing, Broadchurch) as Viscount Anthony Bridgerton, alongside Simone Ashley (Sex Education) as Kate Sharma and Charithra Chandran (Alex Rider) as Edwina Sharma. Adjoa Andoh (Invictus) will play Lady Danbury, the sisters' mother, who is seeking to protect her daughters from the scandals and rumors that plague Regency-era high society. Phoebe Dynevor will reprise her role as Daphne, as will Nicola Coughlan, who will return as the gossip-monger Penelope Fetherington, a.k.a. Lady Whistledown. Simon Basset, Season 1's male lead, will not appear in the new season, as actor Regé-Jean Page turned down an offer to return to the role, despite reportedly being offered $50,000 USD an episode.
The first season of Bridgerton was one of Netflix's biggest hits to date, with the streaming service stating that the period drama is its most popular English-language series ever. The streaming giant has already renewed the series for a third and fourth season. "Bridgerton swept us off our feet," Netflix Vice President of Global TV Bela Bajaria said in April 2021. "We’re planning to be in the Bridgerton business for a long time to come," Bajaria added.
The new season is an adaptation of the second book of eight in Julia Quinn's Briderton novel series, The Viscount Who Loved Me. The series will once again be helmed by show runner and creator Chris Van Dusen and will be produced by Shonda Rhimes' production company, Shondaland.
Following numerous delays related to the COVID-19 pandemic, Season 2 of Bridgerton will premiere exclusively on Netflix on March 25. The complete first season is also currently available on the streaming service.
