Amy Schumer Supports Oscars Co-Host Chris Rock Following 'Sickening' Attack by Will Smith

Comedian and fellow Oscars co-host Amy Schumer recently expressed her support for Chris Rock following the incident that took place at the 94th Academy Awards ceremony.

On social media, Schumer stated she was "triggered and traumatised" when actor Will Smith struck Rock on stage. She wrote, "I love my friend [Chris Rock] and believe he handled it like a pro. Stayed up there and gave an Oscar to his friend [Questlove] and the whole thing was so disturbing." Schumer then added, "So much pain in [Will Smith], anyway I'm still in shock and stunned and sad."

Smith's attack came moments after Rock made a joke pointed at Jada Pinkett Smith, who had shaved her head to deal with alopecia. As part of his monologue, Rock said, "Jada, I love you-- G.I Jane 2, can't wait to see it." While Smith initially appeared to laugh at the joke, Pinkett Smith appeared visibly annoyed. As Rock continued his monologue, Smith was shown approaching Rock on stage and slapping him. As Smith returned to his seat, Rock said only, "Will Smith just smacked the s*** out of me." Smith could be heard yelling, "Keep my wife's name out of your f***ing mouth," repeatedly.

Rock did not press charges. He only recently broke his silence on the subject, explaining that he is still processing the incident. At a show, the comedian said, "I'm still kind of processing what happened. So, at some point I’ll talk about that sh-t. And it will be serious and funny." Smith, meanwhile, has since released a public apology on social media, claiming it was a purely emotional response. "I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be," Smith said.

Smith's behavior has been the subject of criticism from a variety of Hollywood figures, including comedians and fellow actors. More than that, many of criticized the crowd present at the Oscars, as well as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for its lack of a meaningful response. However, it should be noted the Academy recently revealed, "Mr. Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused." The Academy's statement continued, "[But] we also recognize we could have handled the situation differently."

In addition, the Academy launched a review into the incident. It stated, "The Board of Governors today initiated disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Smith for violations of the Academy's Standards of Conduct, including inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behavior, and compromising the integrity of the Academy."
