Every Character In Encanto, Sorted Into Their Hogwarts House

The latest addition to Disney’s offering of animated movies, Encanto brings forth an interesting combination of family drama and cultural motifs. Set in the mountains of Colombia, the story focuses on the Madrigals – a family that has to face unique challenges related not just to their Latin American ancestry but also to their magical gifts.

Considering the theme and the colorful cast of characters, some viewers may make the parallel between the lives of the Madrigals and Harry Potter’s Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. If the family had attended the famous school for magic, they would have likely been sorted in all four houses.

10 Mirabel Could Be A Hat Stall Between Slytherin And Gryffindor

The protagonist of the story, Mirabel, may remind many viewers of Harry Potter, and not just because she wears glasses. She’s an outcast in her family, though in her case, it’s because she lacks a magical gift. The Madrigals are definitely not as abusive as the Dursleys—nowhere near that, in fact—but Mirabel definitely feels the disapproval of her Abuela Alma and the intrinsic inferiority assigned to her by her situation. Because of this, she has a real thirst to prove herself—one that is worthy of a Slytherin.

However, at the same time, Mirabel displays great feats of courage. She recklessly braves the mysterious tower of her uncle Bruno and comes close to sacrificing herself to save the family miracle. Those personality traits are definitely more Gryffindor-oriented. In that sense, Mirabel may very well be a hat stall, suited for two opposing houses.

9 Abuela’s Trauma-Induced Perfectionism Lands Her Slytherin

The matriarch of the family, Abuela Alma, is an incredibly complex character. She's also the reason the family begins to fall apart. The burden of her expectations weighs heavily on the shoulders of all her family members. From a very young age, the children are told to make the family proud and honor the miracle by using their gifts for the community.

In theory, it’s a nice sentiment, but in practice, her perfectionism suffocates her family, making them feel pressured. Her harsh approach to life stems from the trauma of having witnessed the violent death of her husband Pedro. It is her grief that originally created the Encanto, and she never truly overcomes it. Her ambitious nature may be trauma-induced but it’s still a perfect fit for Slytherin.

8 Dolores’s Tendency To Selectively Reveal Rumors Suits A Slytherin

Madrigal’s cousin, Dolores, is a rather mysterious addition to the family. Her super-hearing allows her to always be aware of what is going on, but she has a tendency to selectively reveal rumors according to reasoning that isn’t quite clear. She hides the fact that her uncle Bruno is living in the walls, despite the fact he may have benefitted from some support from family members that weren’t so eager to reject him.

At the other end of the spectrum, she’s happy to blurt out the secret of Bruno’s vision when the whole family is dining with the visiting Guzmans. This has made viewers speculate that she may actually be the real villain of the story and was deliberately working to sabotage the family magic. Either way, she does appear to have a cunning nature, which neatly slides her into the house of the snake.

7 Luisa’s Kindness And Courage Makes Her A Great Gryffindor

If Mirabel displays self-sacrificing tendencies, her older sister Luisa is quite similar. Granted the gift of super-strength, she practically becomes the pillar of the community. She struggles with feelings of inadequacy and feels incredibly weighed down by the pressure she's under. It's only after she has a conversation with Maribel that she realizes she's pushing herself too far and her feelings of vulnerability increase after she loses her powers.

But unlike other members of the family, she never blames anyone for her predicament. In that sense, her true courage lies in her kindness and her ability to be so giving, despite having so many unreasonable requests often piled up on top of her. She’d definitely be a match for the house of the chivalrous.

6 Pepa’s Temperamental Nature Is Perfectly Suited For Gryffindor

Dolores’s mother, Pepa, possesses one of the most powerful gifts in the show—the power to control the weather with her emotions. But this ability isn’t always a good thing. Pepa is also very temperamental, which can make her gift run amok at the worst possible moment. When this happens, she can get anxious and struggle to control herself.

She has the tendency to hold a grudge, as evidenced by her anger with Bruno. But despite her stubbornness, she’s a very caring person and a loving mother. When Bruno makes his return, the two make amends and her resentment burns out. In some ways, Pepa is quite similar to Neville Longbottom, who despite having his own problems with anxiety, is a loyal friend and can be incredibly dangerous when provoked.

5 Camilo’s Mischievousness Would Be Perfectly At Home In Gryffindor Tower

Gryffindor is home to some of the more mischievous characters in Harry Potter; namely, the Weasley twins. Fred and George are well-known for their creativity in creating their pranks and for their fearless dedication to this career path. Encanto’s Camilo may remind viewers of the twins.

His shape-shifting ability gives him a unique skill set he often uses to play tricks on people. But he’s never malicious, and on one occasion, he's shown caring for his anxious mother. Camilo’s joyful mischievousness would be perfectly at home in Gryffindor, and would even make the Marauders proud.

4 Isabela’s Desire To Know Her Limits Makes Her A Fit For Ravenclaw

Mirabel’s sister, Isabela, isn’t exactly the most likable member of the family. Her sibling rivalry with the protagonist makes it hard for viewers to empathize with her. In reality, Isabela has to force herself to suit the perfect mold Abuela has created. She fulfills the family’s expectations because she feels she has to, but her desires are very different.

The epiphany she has during her confrontation with Mirabel suggests that she may be a good fit for Ravenclaw, where she can truly explore her nature and everything she can do at leisure, without having a specific purpose or ambition in mind. Her affinity for plants and determination to support her family may also make her an excellent Hufflepuff.

3 Bruno’s Dedication To His Family Makes Him The Perfect Hufflepuff

It’s hard to think of a person that’s kinder and more dedicated to the Madrigals than Tio Bruno. Despite the fact that he's ostracized for his gift, he still loves them very much. It's for the family’s sake that he chooses to self-isolate within the walls of the casita.

After receiving a vision that could be interpreted poorly for Mirabel, he knows he cannot let Mirabel be treated as he is and therefore sacrifices himself for her. He still craves their proximity but prioritizes everyone else’s well-being. Even while hidden in the walls, he does his best to quietly support the family. Consequently, he’d be the perfect Hufflepuff.

2 Julieta And Agustin’s Accepting Demeanor Match A Hufflepuff's Giving Nature

Mirabel’s mother Julieta is among the few Madrigals who don’t display any overt disapproval of Bruno or of Mirabel. On the contrary, she is supportive of her daughter and sees her as special in her own way. She's a great mother, and her kind and accepting demeanor does credit to the Madrigals. Considering that – and her gift to heal through food – she may very well be an heir to Helga Hufflepuff herself.

Mirabel’s father, Agustin, is just as kind. He always prioritizes his family, even telling his daughter to hide the vision from the other Madrigals for her sake. He’s often clumsy, but his fierce desire to protect Mirabel is a great match for the house of the badger.

1 Felix’s Joie De Vivre Would Suit A Happy-Go-Lucky Hufflepuff

If Pepa is temperamental, Felix is her complete opposite. His exuberance and joie de vivre make him the perfect counterpart and anchor for his wife. He's always there to provide her with support. Unlike Pepa, she doesn’t resent Bruno and only seems disapproving of Abuela, whose treatment of Pepa makes her more anxious.

His party spirit makes him a joy to have around but he’s also hasty to rush to the aid of the younger members of the family when they're in trouble. Overall, he wouldn’t be out of place in Hufflepuff, both for his happy-go-lucky demeanor and for his loyalty to his family.
