Elden Ring Secures 'Must-Play' Metacritic Status With Overwhelmingly Positive Reviews

FromSoftware fans can rest easy as the studio's highly-anticipated RPG Elden Ring is raking in positive reviews.

According to video game review aggregator site MetacriticElden Ring sits with an overall score of an impressive 97 out of 100, based on the feedback of 45 critics. The overwhelmingly positive response earned it to the coveted title of a "Metacritic Must Play," indicating to gamers around that world that the punishing open-world RPG is well-worth their time. As it currently stands, FromSoftware's latest is one of the best-reviewed games of 2022, narrowly beating out the PlayStation 5 exclusive Horizon Forbidden West and the indie beat-em-up Sifu.

Many of the listed reviews praise the game's diverse, sweeping open-world, with many stating that the myriad secrets and bosses tucked into its corners make for an engaging journey of discovery. Beyond this, several critics point out that Elden Ring's combat system is an impressive evolution of the formula established in the influential Dark Souls series. While some identify the game's punishing difficulty as a possible deterrent for less-experienced players, Elden Ring seemingly strikes a decent balance between tough and fair in its gameplay loop.

Announced in 2019, Elden Ring is the latest game from the revered developer FromSoftware. After exploring a more action-adventure-focused experience in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, the studio is returning to the formula it established with the Souls franchise, albeit with a few twists. Taking place in an entirely-open world, Elden Ring has earned many comparisons to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, a significant departure to the level design utilized throughout Dark Souls.

While the grim-fantasy setting of Elden Ring will no doubt look familiar to fans of FromSoftware's previous RPGs, the studio collaborated with beloved fantasy writer George R.R. Martin to bring the world to life. The author of A Song of Ice and Fire "wrote the original mythos for this game. He created a backstory or a history that takes place many, many years before the events of the game itself, and he wrote this in collaboration with [Elden Ring creator] Hidetaka Miyazaki," said FromSoftware spokesperson Yasuhiro Kitao. Miyazaki also teased that Martin would likely be shocked to see how the developer warped and twisted many of his creations to emphasize the degraded nature of the fictional setting of the Lands Between.

Elden Ring launches on Feb. 25 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC.
