Andrew Garfield Has 'No Plans' to Return to Spider-Man Again

Actor Andrew Garfield was consistent over the last year when he denied his involvement in Spider-Man: No Way Home. His major appearance in the momentous film proved that that was a lie and, more than that, gave some audiences hope that the star would return in future films as Spider-Man once again.

In an interview with Variety, Garfield said, "No plans, that's the truth." He acknowledged, "Everyone's gonna call me a liar for the rest of my life. I'm the boy who cried wolf."

Interestingly, though Garfield managed to cause debate early on concerning his involvement in No Way Home, even after photos and behind-the-scenes footage leaked online, Tick, Tick... Boom! director Lin-Manuel Miranda mentioned how challenging it appeared for the Academy Award-nominated actor.

Miranda explained, "To his credit, he never said it to me... He always denied it, but I was there the day it leaked. He was on my set in November when it leaked that he was in talks and I quietly went up to him and said, 'Bro, are you in the new 'Spider-Man?' and he went, 'Shut up, shut up.' It was the worst acting I'd ever seen him do. And I went, 'He's gotta practice that, that denial,' and he got very good at it, but I was there when he first workshopped it."

Garfield made his debut as the Web-Slinger in Sony's Amazing Spider-Man film back in 2012. The franchise reboot spawned a sequel, but the poor box office performance of Amazing Spider-Man 2 resulted in the end of the planned film saga. His appearance in No Way Home was rumored early in the film's development-- rumors supported by photos of the actor's Amazing Spider-Man costume, as well a a short clip of him on set, which he dismissed as being a deepfake.

Since the film's release, fans have called for Sony to continue the Amazing Spider-Man franchise with Garfield attached. Although no announcements have been made and it's uncertain if Sony will ever attempt to continue the franchise, fans can still catch more of Garfield in bonus footage for No Way Home. The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of Spider-Man: No Way Home includes over 80 minutes of bloopers, behind-the-scenes moments and seven featurettes shedding light on the creative process.

Spider-Man: No Way Home arrives on digital release on March 22, followed by the Blu-ray and DVD versions on April 12.
