Jean Grey's new costume, designed by fan-favorite artist Russell Dauterman, is a reimagining of some of her most popular X-Men attires.
Dauterman unveiled the costume via social media, highlighting its details and explaining how some of Jean's previous ensembles influenced its creation. The artist says that he used Jean's Hellfire Gala outfit as the base for this "everyday superhero costume," eliminating the look's exposed back and cape in favor of more practical coverings. Additionally, in response to comments on the tweet, Dauterman mentioned that he thought Jean's telekinetic spikes would be impractical for different artists to draw and therefore took them out of the design.
Furthermore, Dauterman says that he incorporated elements of Jean's costumes from the X-Men: Evolution animated series and Whilce Portacio's X-Factor into this design.
This outfit is the latest from Dauterman, who regularly redesigns the X-Men's wardrobe. He previously created a costume for Jean that appeared in Giant-Size X-Men: Jean Grey and Emma Frost #1, reimagining Jean's classic Jim Lee-designed attire in green and gold. Later, Dauterman designed new outfits for various X-Men to wear during the Hellfire Gala, a high fashion party similar to the real-world Met Gala. These outfits were used exclusively for the party and were largely impractical, with characters ditching their spandex for spikes, fur, and headdresses. However, Dauterman's latest design shows that any outfit can become perfect superhero attire with a bit of rethinking.
Jean's new look will appear in upcoming issues of X-Men, written by Gerry Duggan and drawn by Javier Pina. Recent issues of the title have also given Cyclops a bold new design in the form of the alter ego Captain Krakoa. After Cyclops died on the streets of New York, the X-Men's Quiet Council forced him to take on a different persona so nobody would discover the secret of the resurrection protocols.
In addition to crafting Jean's new outfit, Dauterman has also redesigned Storm's attire for the upcoming series, X-Men Red. Written by Al Ewing and drawn by Stefano Caselli, the series focuses on Storm as the Regent of the X-Men's Arakko colony as she tries to create a peaceful home for mutants. Despite Storm's potent power set, Ewing says he considers Storm's most exciting quality to be the way she perpetually challenges herself and those around her. "That's intriguing to me -- that she rises to challenges on that level."
Fans interested in tracking down more of Dauterman's art can find it across the covers of various Marvel titles. Dauterman regularly draws variants depicting the visual histories of different characters by overlaying a pattern of their costume changes. These covers can be found on monthly installments of Avengers Forever and select issues of She-Hulk, Inferno and X Lives of Wolverine.
