Meet The Younger Mother In The World Who Gave Birth At A Very Young Age Of 5 Years Old

Most 5 year-olds play with baby dolls, and have barely just been out of being the toddler stage. But for Lina Medina from Peru, puberty proved to be a fleeting, confusing thing that may hit anyone at any time.

Born on September 27, 1933, Lina was normal just like any other girl of her age until one day. Her parents noticed that her belly abruptly increased in size and her body became mature enough. Initially they thought she has a tvm0r in her belly and brought her to the hospital.

Doctors confirmed her pregnancy after they took x-rays of her uterus. They also included  a study on her hormones. The parents also revealed that their daughter have been having her regular menstrual period that suddenly stopped.

The bizarre event baffled many doctors and specialists. They cannot afford to miss the opportunity to study this so-called “medical miracle.” Dr. Gerardo Lozada then transferred her to a hospital in Lima, Peru so that she could be observed at all times.

On May 14, 1939, at the age of five years and seven months, Lina gave birth to a baby boy via cesarean section as her pelvis had not enough space to deliver baby. Her baby was born a healthy 6lbs. They named infant Gerardo in honour of the doctor who delivered him.

Dr. Lozada and Dr. Busalleu, with Dr. Colareta performed the the operation. They later found out during the procedure that she already had fully developed mammary glands and reproductive organs. Their findings suggests that Lina had a rare condition called “precocious puberty.”

Her case during that time rocked the medical world. Dr. Edmundo Escomel reported the case in details through his medical journal La Presse Médicale. It also included a few additional details like the time she had her first period at the age of eight months, much earlier than what Lina’s parents told the doctors. The report also detailed that at the age of four, she already had prominent chest development. By five, her figure displayed pelvic widening and advanced bone maturation.

Growing up, Gerardo always believed Lina was his sister but at the age of ten was told she was his mother. Gerardo grew up healthy but expired at the relatively young age of 40 in 1979 after suffering from a bone ailment.

Surprisingly, the Medina family continued to live a normal life. Lina worked as a secretary in the Lima clinic of Lozada, who gave her an education and helped put her son through high school.

As of 2002, Lina still lives with her husband in a poor district of Lima, Peru known as “Little Chicago.”

The biological father of Medina’s son has never been revealed. To this day, she refuses to share who the father was, or the circumstances of her very early pregnancy. Police arrested her father got due to suspicion of violating a minor. But due to lack of evidence, the authorities eventually released him.

The youngest mother in the world attracts media attention again after she refused an interview with Reuters that year, just as she had turned away many reporters in the past years.

Despite the lack of any concrete evidence on the matter, there was some speculation on how Lina became a 5-year-old mother. One theory centered on her household duty of washing clothes at the nearby river. She often went alone, and someone may have taken advantage of her there.

Another theory revolved around the religious festivals. that were held throughout the year in remote indigenous villages such as Lina’s. Some said the little girl might have gotten pregnant after getting caught up in one of the group intimate relationships that were common during these festivities.
