A passer-by on Christmas Day found a meter-long shell on a riverbank in Argentina which may be from a glyptodont, a prehistoric kind of giant armadillo.
For many of us, a stroll over the Christmas holidays is relatively uneventful but for one man in Argentina, his jaunt was much more exciting.
Farmer Juan de Dios Sota was taking his cows to graze when he spotted the unusual protrusion and didn’t recognize it to be the carcass of a horse or cow, which is common in the region.
While out on a Christmas Day stroll along a stream to the south of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Juan de Dios Sota spotted something peculiar sticking out of a riverbank. The object was greenish and pebbly, and at first, he thought he had discovered an enormous dinosaur egg. He was wrong.
With a little more excavation, the unusual find turned out to be something much more recent: a nearly complete, meter-long shell of a beast that trundled around South America over 10,000 years ago!
Glyptodonts found in Argentine
“My husband went out to the car and when he came back he said, ‘Hey, I just found an egg that looks like it came from a dinosaur,” his wife Reina Coronel said.
Various experts who saw television pictures of the object said it was likely to be a glyptodont shell.
“There is no doubt that it looks like a glyptodont,” said paleontologist Alejandro Kramarz of the Bernadino Rivadavia Natural Sciences Museum.
Local media said that the farmer stumbled across the ‘four glyptodonts’.
Glyptodonts are the ancestors of modern armadillos. They had big round armored shells and weighed up to a ton.
They lived in South America for tens of millions of years.
So shocking!
