Gen Z Wants the Cachupoy Back and Honestly We're Not Complaining

(SPOT.ph) Teens on TikTok have a very pertinent argument: middle-part hairstyles are better than side parts. Okay, so it may not be extremely hard-hitting, but for millennials and older generations who have lived by their side-parts since they were freed from their homemade bowl cuts (Read: a parent with a bowl, sharp scissors, and a well-meant but misguided idea on what is best for their kids), this means a lot. TBH though, the middle-part is nothing new; this trend just proves that we really are all just stuck in a massive trends-cycle that seems arbitrary at best—we'll just keep our fingers crossed the shoulder pads of the'80s are dropped from the wheel entirely.

Where did the Gen Z middle part TikTok trend begin?

When I don’t have bangs I rock the middle part I swear ##BeautyTutorial ##fyp ##middlepart

Reports point to a summer 2020 TikTok uploaded by a certain Miss Lady Gleep. In the clip, they state, "Prove me wrong, but I don’t think there is a single person who looks better with a side part than they do a middle part," unwittingly—or perhaps they knew the fire they were about to start—setting off another generational schism with a single TikTok. Also, can we just point out the funny irony that Miss Lady Gleep isn't even sporting a middle-part in the OG clip? Talk about the power of the audio.

You've most likely heard Miss Lady Gleep's words being used over countless TikToks of teens committing style treason—whoops, we meant taking a comb or their hands to their hair and shifting their part from the beloved side to the cool, "new" middle. The #MiddlePartChallenge and its many iterations have spawned more than just vids of people comparing their side and middle parts, there are tutorials and styling tips on middle-part haircuts, and one artist even reimagined Ariel—as in the Disney mermaid princess with the luscious, side-parted red hair—with the middle part. Surprisingly, it didn't look to bad, but it doesn't look quite right to us either.

So why aren't we complaining?

Between the butterfly clips, chunky sneakers, and everything '90s, we're welcoming this trend back with open arms—us actually sporting it is a different thing altogether. Parting your hair down the middle has been around since forever. Think everything from those gloomy Queen Victoria portraits with the almost-clinical line parting her hair all the way to old-school Pinoy comedian Cachupoy.

Remember all the boy bands whose members sported heart-like shapes on their foreheads thanks to the cachupoy? And Leonardo Di Caprio with his pefectly messily tousled hair? Never quite middle, never quite side, but always just right. Well, we're supporting the Gen Z kids' argument with throwback pictures of some of the biggest '90s Pinoy heartthrobs who rocked this hairstyle long before the Gen Zs caught on—plus, we can't leave out Cachupoy. Their opinion on skinny jeans though, we'll leave for you to decide on yourself.

Salvador Garcia Tampac earned the nickname Cachupoy after making the hairstyle his trademark—and since the talented actor, comedian, and singer was an entertainment mainstay throughout the latter half of the 20th century, the name stuck even when his hairline receded too far back for him to keep a middle-part.

Carlo Aquino and his middle part were a mainstay of the 1999 teen show G-Mik along with other sometime cachupoy aficionados Stefano Mori, John Prats, and Miko Samson. He's stayed in the limelight ever since, but has moved on to a side part.

Remember this cutie from TGIS and Growing Up? That middle part sure is hard to forget. He has since retired from showbiz but fingers crossed his middle part stays the same.

The cleanest middle part on this list goes to Dino Guevarra, who was also part of the TGIS cast in the '90s. He has dropped out of the showbiz limelight since then but he posted this throwback himself on Facebook in 2019—and it loks like he has moved on to a side aprt as well.

Arguably the biggest cachupoy torchbearer, Patrick Garcia was one of the biggest faces of the '90s. He was on AngTV, Tabing Ilog, and played the main character in the hard hitting Batang PX (1997).
